Area Sports Briefs: Carson ends season with loss in state tournament

Carson’s Junior American Legion baseball season ended with a 14-5 state-tourney loss to Bear Grass on Sunday in Swansboro.
Carson (29-9) won the Mid-Area and Area III championships and finished in the state’s top six.
Carson scored three runs in top of the first, but Bear Grass (22-3) got four in the bottom half.
Carson made it 4-4 in the second and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth. But Bear Grass scored 10 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and pulled away.
Chase Earnhardt had two hits and drove in two runs for Carson. Cole Hales had three hits. Brycen Holshouser pitched four innings and took the loss.
Manager Chris Cauble thanked supporters and sponsors for a great year.

Local golf
Eric Edwards (Salisbury, George Mason) shot 1-over 71 in the rain-delayed Carolinas Amateur in Charleston.
Edwards shot 2-67-74-71 — 284 for the tournament to finish 4-over.

The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The team of Walt & Kim Kincaid and Gene & Mary Seaford took first place. The team of Jim & Susan Wydner and Ty & Beverly Cobb finished second. Bob Eudy won closest to the pin. Jim Wydner won longest putt.

Prep track
Competing for the Salisbury Speedsters, Cambrea Sturgis ran 23.98 seconds in the 200 in the Russell Blunt East Coast Invitational to break a meet record.
Sturgis ran 24.18 in the prelim.

Cheerleading
North Rowan’s Janiah Hall will be a cheerleader for tonight’s East-West basketball game in Greensboro and Wednesday’s all-star football game.

Youth softball
Rowan County LittleLeague’s 11-12 all-stars won, 5-4, against Wilkes County on Sunday in the state tournament being held in Charlotte.

Intimidators
KANNAPOLIS,— John Silviano hit a double in the fifth to give the Greensboro Grasshoppers a 5-4 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Sunday.
