Area Sports Briefs: All-American Russell 6th in national event

Competing for the Salisbury Speedsters, North Rowan rising senior Payton Russell placed sixth in the 400 meter dash in the 20th AAU Club National Championships held at Disney ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando.
Russell earned All-America recognition.
Russell was clocked in 56.52 seconds in the 400 final. She ran 56.80 to advance to the final.
In the 200, Russell ran 25.20 and 25.63. She finished 17th.

A.L. Brown 14-year-old Love Stout ran 13.87 in the 100 meters and was 44th out of 65 competitors.

Desire Stout, 9, competed in the 100, ran 16.16 and was 39th out of 67 runners.

Local golf
Eric Edwards (Salisbury, George Mason) shot 4-over 74 in the third round of the Carolinas Amateur Championship in Charleston.
Edwards, who shot 72 Thursday and 67 Friday, is tied for 22nd.

Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot a final-round 7-under 64 and finished second in a G-Pro Tour event at The Club at Irish Creek on Friday.
Adams shot 68s in the first two rounds and finished at 13-under 200. He won $4,125.
Matt Schall took first place with a 195 total. Schall and Adams rank 1-2, respectively, on the money list.

East-West games
East-West All-Star week begins with a basketball doubleheader on Monday.
West Rowan graduate Khaila Hall will play for the West team in the girls basketball game at 6:30 p.m. at Greensboro Coliseum.
The 5-foot-10 Hall, who signed with Longwood, will be wearing No. 42 and is expected to play forward on a team loaded with guards.
The boys game will follow the girls game at about 8:30 p.m.

Salisbury graduates Landon Goodman (Anderson) and Cristian Uribe (UNC Pembroke) will play for the West squad in the all-star soccer game scheduled for Tuesday at Greensboro’s MacPherson Stadium.
That’s a girls-boys doubleheader with the girls game set for 6:30 p.m. and the boys game at 8:30 p.m.

The East-West football game is set for Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Robert B. Jamieson Stadium in Greensboro.
There will be a fireworks show at halftime.
West Rowan quarterback Kacey Otto, Davie receiver Ben Ellis and East Rowan offensive lineman Sawyer Kimmer will be playing for the West squad, along with A.L. Brown offensive lineman Cameron Peters and A.L. Brown defensive lineman Kentrell Barkley.

West Rowan’s Bailey Herndon and Jacqueline Blabon will be cheerleaders at the basketball game on Monday and the football game on Wednesday.

China Grove fall ball
China Grove youth baseball and softball registration is being held until Aug. 20 at Dale’s Sporting Goods. The cost is $50.
Divisions for baseball are Coach Pitch (ages 5-6), Pitching Machine (ages 7-8), baseball (ages 9-10) and baseball (ages 11-12).
There are softball divisions for ages 5-8 and 9-11.
