CHICKWEED: Coming again to Salisbury on July 23 is the 5th annual CHICKWEED ~ Celebrating Indestructible Women, an all-women revue featuring music, and art.  There is no other event like this in Rowan County!  This year, over twelve performing artists bring original and popular music to an 8-hour concert and mini-festival in downtown Salisbury.

CHICKWEED, a 3-year recipient of the Rowan Arts Council Arts & Cultural Development Grant, is a non-profit organization that aims to deliver the message of empowerment, through the arts, to women victims of violence.  Created by seven local women musicians as an opportunity to perform together, CHICKWEED created the perfect synergy to foster a fundraising and awareness event…for women, by women… for the Family Crisis Council of Rowan and its Battered Women’s Shelter.  CHICKWEED donates 100% of its net proceeds to the women’s shelter.

Performers, spanning generations and genres, take the CHICKWEED stage from 4 p.m. to midnight, while guests enjoy local food, wine, and beer and a host of vendors offering creative and interesting wares.  A special treat this year: CHICKWEED will be introducing 14-year old Sophia Daniz, a Reverbnation.com favorite, and the return of teen Maya Beth Atkins, whose original song is featured in a Duke Power commercial.  10 other acts join CHICKWEED this year, including the return of LYRIC and her funk band from Asheville.

The Trolley Barn at Liberty and Lee Streets is the site where the festivities take place both in outdoors and the indoors, where at 4 p.m., art and music fill the air as men and women alike take in the concert and street-fair setting for the fifth annual celebration.  Despite an all-female cast, all are invited and welcomed to CHICKWEED!

Introducing the CHICKWEED performers:

• Rebecca Stinson: Blues and gospel [Salisbury] Rebecca may be best remembered in Salisbury for her astounding vocals with the trio that frequently performed at the Daily Grind Coffee Shop when it was located in both Salisbury & Spencer.  Rebecca enjoys to perform at many church events, both those of sorrow and joy ~ her voice sweeping over attendees and leaving them breathless.  We are so very happy to have Rebecca at CHICKWEED 2016!

• Maya Beth Atkins: singer /songwriter / guitarist  [Charlotte] Sixteen year-old singer-songwriter Maya Beth Atkins grew up with a song on her lips and a guitar in her hand. Her original songs sometimes draw on real life experiences, but more often than not, they seem inspired by lives she has not yet lived. The influences of Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Gillian Welch, Allison Krauss and Alice in Chains all serve to create a unique and diverse body of work.  Maya has performed at the popular Evening Muse and the historic Double Door Inn in Charlotte, and has opened for such acts as Jennifer Daniels, Gigi Dover, and Reeve Coobs.   Maya is featured fronting an all-girl band, singing one of her original tunes, in a Duke Energy commercial!

• LYRIC:  Pop, soul, funk singer/guitarist  [Asheville] With an enlightened mixture of pop, soul, funk, and bowties; LYRIC awakens an undiscovered spirit within their audience. Described by many as the best band in Asheville, LYRIC delights crowds across the region.  Primarily influenced by Tracy Chapman, India Arie, and George Clinton, Leeda “Lyric” Jones has a voice all her own.  From humble beginnings as street musicians, LYRIC quickly brought large crowds together to form a following.  Leeda, lead singer, guitarist, and lyricist, plays a funky rhythm guitar with sizzling leads accompanied by her soul gripping lead vocals, while the band brings funk style slap and a playful flare on funk.  In addition to her busy performance schedule, Leeda teaches at the Ashville Academy of Music.

• Sophia Daniz: Sophia has a voice and natural knack for picking up multiple instruments. She can belt as high as Jennifer Hudson or play the guitar as fluidly as Taylor Swift; but, her drive and her vision are what set Sophia apart from other young, emerging artists. While she’s so young, she understands the importance of finding her own unique sound as an artist.  Her songs cover the emotional spectrum, from catchy fun and sticking in your head for days to meaningful, innocent questioning. Sophia brings to CHICKWEED the culmination of her talented vision, unique imagination and the vocal and songwriting chops to match.

• Mary Gillespie: Country music guitarist & singer [Salisbury] Mary Gillespie, a Rowan County resident for most of her life, started playing the guitar at 23, performing in Nashville at the Nashville Palace and for the Charlie Daniels Talent Roundup.  Mary enjoys playing country, bluegrass, folk, southern rock and contemporary Christian music and has been a feature artist in the local and very popular (and sold-out!) Songs Down a Country Road and Meet Me in Memphis shows.

• Ang Medlin :  Alternative singer/songwriter hailing  [Cherryville] Blending the acoustic sounds of guitars and percussion with a soulfully powerful voice is the acoustic duo known as ANG. Consisting of Ang Medlin and Tom Williams, the pair performs locally and regionally throughout the South East promoting their first CD “Play Without Fear”.

• Ashley Jo Farmer:  Pop singer/songwriter [Salisbury] Ashley Jo Farmer, is a singer/songwriter rooted in the heart of Salisbury, North Carolina, and is a gifted vocalist with a wondrous range of textures and styles, and pitch-perfect control.  She harmonizes effortlessly and is a consummate performer with a wide open heart.   Ashley currently tours as background vocalist for the Billy Jonas Band, playing at many notable venues including the White House Easter Egg Roll! Ashley Jo brings her own three-piece backing band, the Ashley Jo Farmer Band (AJF Band), to CHICKWEED.

• Chelsea Rhae Childers:  Folk Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist [Gastonia] Since the age of thirteen, Chelsea Rhae Childers has been playing guitar, performing, and writing creative melodies. She has one solo EP recorded, with songs rooted in an intriguing partnership of folk/rock melodies, and anti-folk acoustic songs.  Chelsea’s lyrics are eclectic, often taking the form of abstract narratives or first-person character studies, similar to short stories or vignettes put to song, and often with a tinge of humor. Chelsea Rhae Childers is a principal in the CHICKWEED organization.

• Laura Vella:  Blues infused guitarist/pianist [NYC] Laura Vella is the rare, multi-talented gem every music producer mines for. Laura plays both acoustic and electric guitar, piano, and is an accomplished drummer. Her smoky, bluesy voice covers a truly amazing array of tunes (friends call her the walking juke box!) as well as a portfolio of original tunes.  Laura hails from NYC where her multi-faceted performances were a mainstay of the local music scene.   This is Laura’s fifth year with CHICKWEED!

• Reeve Coobs & The Band of Men:  Original songwriter/guitarist & band [Cornelius] One of the best voices in the area belongs to Charlotte based Reeve Coobs. Coobs’ alto stands out for its clarity, power and range.  Unbridled, Reeve runs the gamut of folk from the pop end to the rock end, picking up some country/Americana sounds on the way. While Reeve’s flawless, live vocals rival the precision and quality of a great studio recording, her talents extend even beyond that to skilled guitar-work and piano-playing. Coobs surrounds herself with a crack band to pull out the nuance in her songs or kick things into overdrive.

• Grace Bemus: Bluegrass fiddle & guitar duo [Salisbury] CHICKWEED is delighted to have our very, youngest performer join us this year, Gracie Bemus accompanied by her brother Gabriel ~ a bluegrass fiddle player and singer from Salisbury, NC return for her second (2014) CHICKWEED. Grace Bemus (age 10) began playing the fiddle at the age of 6 , and soon began playing bluegrass tunes with her big brother, Gabriel (age 13).  Grace has been awarded and recognized at numerous competitions such as the Union Grove Fiddlers Convention, Salisbury’s Buskers-Bash, East Rowan Fiddlers Convention, and most recently performed at MerleFest.

• Courtney Puckett and The Bourgeoisie:  smooth jazz [Salisbury] Courtney Puckett is a talented jazz singer, songwriter, and guitarist, noted for her vocal style which has been compared to Madeliene Peyroux, Billie Holiday, and Édith Piaf.  Courtney backs her sweet smoke-and-whiskey vocals with The Bourgeoisie, made up of guitarist/pianist Iain Rocco and drummer Chad Safrit.  The trio has been making a name for themselves in local music circles with their uniquely smooth sound.

• Shane Manier:  Spoken Word Art  [Charlotte] Shane is the founder of Guerilla Poets whose slogan is “Poetry In Action, the Movement on Mentality.” Guerilla Poets are a flash poetry mob that does poetry in unexpected places in the hopes that it will touch the lives of those who normally wouldn’t listen to poetry.  The group, a 501(c) 3 non-profit agency, stays true to its mission is to give poetry back to the people – to inspire, empower and inform.

The two companies provide distinctive bodywork for the greater Rowan area, dedicated to improving the health, knowledge, and state of mind of our clients by offering holistic treatments and healing of the body, mind, and spirit. The therapists are all highly skilled massage and bodywork therapists, certified in some of the most sought after bodywork techniques in the industry.
