Area Sports Briefs: Rowan County opens series at Newman Park tonight

Rowan County’s American Legion team starts a best-of-five, second-round series at home tonight against Davidson County at 7 p.m.
Davidson County advanced on Sunday by beating Mooresville 10-0 to take a first-round series two games to one.
Rowan County had a bye in the first round.
Southern Divison champ Rowan County (21-8) is the No. 2 overall seed for the Area III playoffs. Northern Division champ High Point is seeded No. 1.
Davidson is 9-11 and is the No. 7 overall seed for the Area III playoffs, but it’s a club that got many of its standout players late in the season after North Davidson won the 4A high school championship.
Winston-Salem topped Kannapolis, 7-5, in extra innings on Sunday to advance to the second round.
Winston-Salem, the No. 9 overall seed, starts a series tonight at High Point, which had a first-round bye.
Eastern Randolph, the No. 12 overall seed, knocked out Concord with a 9-6 win on Sunday. Eastern Randolph won the series two games to one.
Eastern Randolph starts a series tonight at Greensboro, the No. 4 overall seed.
Greensboro eliminated Stanly County on Saturday.
Mocksville out-slugged Kernersville, 15-12, at Rock Park on Sunday to win that series two games to one.
The No. 6 overall seed, Mocksville opens a series at 1 p.m. this afternoon against Randolph County at McCrary Park.
Randolph, the runner-up in the Northern Division and the No. 3 overall seed, had a first-round bye.

Intimidators win
HICKORY — Max Beatty threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators over the Hickory Crawdads in a 3-1 win on Sunday.
Beatty (1-1) picked up the win after he struck out six while allowing two hits.
Kannapolis went up 3-0 in the seventh after K.J. Woods hit a solo home run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Hickory saw its comeback attempt come up short after Dylan Moore hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to two.
Jonathan Hernandez (7-6) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits in the South Atlantic League game. He also struck out six and walked three. Taylore Cherry recorded his fifth save of the season.
Despite the loss, Hickory is 12-4 against Kannapolis this season.
Kannapolis is at home tonight against Hagerstown. Fireworks will follow the game.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was Beverly & Ty Cobb, Azalee Story and David Huneycutt.
The second-place team was Jay Owens and Gene & Mary Seaford
Owens won closest to the pin. Lexie Miller won longest putt.

Minor leagues
Craig Brooks (Catawba) is dominating in a relief role for the South Bend Cubs. Brooks is 2-1 with five saves and a 1.39 ERA.
Brooks has struck out 42 batters in 32 innings. He’s held opponents to a .196 batting average.

Wood bat leagues
Chance Bowden (Salisbury, Catawba) hit his first homer of the season on Friday for the SBA Bones of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.
