Area Sports Briefs: Carson Junior Legion wins two

arson’s Junior Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader from West Rowan on Saturday, taking a 5-3 victory in a league game and rolling 11-3 in a non-league game.
Cole Hales pitched a one-hitter for Carson (20-3) in the league game.
Maddux Holshouser, Brycen Holshouser and Luke Barringer had two hits each for Carson.
Olen Stamper pitched five innings and struck out seven for West Rowan.

In the second game, Devan Gay pitched a complete game for Carson.
Chase Earnhardt drove in three runs.
J.D. Basinger had three hits and two RBIs for West.

College football
The South Atlantic Conference will be featured as part of the Division II Football Showcase in 2016 as the Catawba game at Newberry on Oct. 1 will be carried by ESPN3. The 6 p.m. kick-off is part of the 22-game NCAA II television package for 2016.
“It gives us great pride to gain the exposure for our program at the national level,” Catawba head coach Curtis Walker said.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators beat Delmarva, 2-1, on Star Wars Night at Intimidators Stadum in front of a sell-out crowd.
The crowd was the biggest of the year for the Intimidators and the largest since a July 21 game in 2012 against the Charleston Riverdogs drew 4,935.
Johnathan Frebis (5-6) pitched six inings for the win. Seby Zavala and Grant Massey drove in runs for Kannapolis.
The Intimidators play Delmarva today at 5:05 p.m.

Parnell update
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) earned his sixth save for the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday when he closed out a 3-0 win against Syracuse.
Parnell pitched the ninth and allowed two hits and a walk, but he had a strikeout and preserved the shutout.

Local golf
The McCanless Ladies played their Member-Member Tournament on Saturday.

Parks and Rec

Hoops Unlimited
The 23rd annual Hoops Unlimited basketball camp will be held at North Stanly Middle School on June 27-30.
The camp is for boys and girls in grades 6-10.
The cost of the all- day camp is $110, which includes a camp shirt and “all you can eat lunch” each day.
