Area Sports Briefs: Parnell sent to minors

The Detroit Tigers optioned right-handed pitcher Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) to Triple-A Toledo following a 10-9 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Monday.
Parnell, 31, had a 7.36 ERA in four appearances with the Tigers.
He had a 3.98 ERA with Toledo before being called up by Detroit.
Parnell allowed one run on two hits, plus a walk, in an inning on Monday. He allowed a run in three of his four appearances.

Local golf
In the NC Junior Girls Championship at the Country Club of Salisbury, Asheville’s Rachel Kuehn and Cary’s Riley Smyth shot 69s to lead first-day qualifying on Tuesday.
Salisbury grad Grace Yatawara shot 78.
Match play will start this afternoon at 2 p.m., with the low 31 from stroke play and defending champion Grace Massengill of Hickory, the No. 1 seed.

Fifty-eight GARS members played in foursomes at Rolling Hills on Tuesday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Tom Talbert with a net of 61.21. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Lou Manning with a net of 64.64. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Andy Griffin with a net of 64.13.
Low ‘D’ Flight player was Johnny Graham with a net of 71.81.
Shooting their age or better were Buddy Barger, Larry Fowler, Dick Hatoway, Lou Manning, Donald Martin, J.C. Ritchie and Clayton Steele.

Charlie Barr, who will be an eighth-grader at Salisbury Academy, shot 77 at Wilson’s Wedgewood Country Club and qualified for the 49th NC Junior Boys tournament. Barr tied for 16th in the qualifying round.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress shot a 72 in the first round of the Tarheel Junior Golf Tournament at the Greensboro Country Club Farm Course. Childress is third in his age group and fifth overall. The 2nd round will be today.

Sonny Wilson of Mocksville made a hole-in-one at McCanless on Tuesday.
He aced the 180-yard No. 12 hole with a 3-hybrid.
Wilson’s playing partners in the “Tuesday Scramble” were Henry Morgan, Ty Cobb and Lenny Maseuli.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators got three hits and three RBIs from Tyler Sullivan but lost, 5-4, at Delmarva on Tuesday.
The Intimidators continue their road trip with a 7:05 p.m. game at Delmarva tonight.

Legion baseball
Greensboro beat Randolph County, 9-8, on Tuesday in a divisional game.

Rowan County hosts is off tonight. Rowan hosts Kernersville on Thursday and is home against Steubenville, Ohio, on Friday.

Junior Legion
Carson rallied to beat Rowan County, 8-3, in a league game on Tuesday.
Carson trailed 3-0 but scored four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
Matthew Donahue pitched a complete game for Carson and struck out five. Cameron Prugh and Karson Beacham drove in two runs each.
Carson plays at West Rowan tonight at 7 in a non-league game.
