Area Sports Briefs: Former Davie hurler drafted

Gardner-Webb’s Jeremy Walker (Davie County) was picked on the fifth round of the MLB draft by the Atlanta Braves.
Walker was the 139th pick. Walker is the highest pick for a GWU prospect since Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) went to the Cincinnati Reds in the 3rd round of the 2005 draft.
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Walker was the fourth pick from the state of North Carolina. He was 9-5 as a junior with a 3.77 ERA. He struck out 99 in 100 innings, while walking 27.
Walker pitched a one-hitter on April 16 in a 3-1 win over High Point.

Prep basketball
Davie’s new girls basketball coach is Kevin Revels.
Revels has been an assistant at South View, a winning program in Hope Mills for many years.

Prep baseball
North Rowan’s Holden Lanier will continue his baseball career and education at Guilford Tech.
The third baseman batted .368 for the Cavaliers as a senior after transferring from West Davidson. He drove in 18 runs and scored 15.

Junior Legion
Carson dropped a 14-13 non-division slugfest against Concord on Friday at Mount Pleasant High.
Daniel Leonard had four hits for Carson (8-3). Luke Barringer had three hits and four RBIs. Karson Beacham had two hits.
Matthew Donahue, Jaxon Miller, Devan Gay and Zac Lee pitched for Carson.

Lions golf
In the Salisbury Lions Club’s 32nd golf tournament, winners of the First Flight were Gus Andrews, Grey Medinger, Tommy Trexler and Steve Vail with a 56.
The team of Ken Safriet, Daniel Safriet, Tom Talbert and Randy Tidwell shot 64 and won the Second Flight on a scorecard playoff,
The team of Tim Beaver, Dan Martin, Jesse Gelbow and Mark Matney shot 67 to win the Third Flight on a scorecard playoff
Closest to pin winners were Dennis Andrade, Medinger, Jay Kobylarz and Andrade again.
Straightest shot winner was Charlie Roberts. Longest putt winner was Jim Duncan. Closest to the pin on second shot winners were Randy Bingham, Larry Petrea, Tom Trexler, Joe Cress and Andrade .

Hole-in-one
Lauren Denhard, 14, made a hole-in-one at The Country Club of Salisbury.
She aced the 124-yard No. 9 hole with a 7-iron.
Caren Soderlind witnessed the shot.
Denhard will be a sophomore at Gray Stone and plays on the Peggy Kirk Bell Golf Tour.

Minor leagues
Despite leading for much of the game, the Kannapolis Intimidators lost to Hickory, 7-5.
The Intimidators (23-39) tallied 10 hits.
Johan Cruz slugged his third home run of the season for Kannapolis.
The Intimidators wrap up the series against the Crawdads today at 5:05 p.m.

Brooks has 32 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings. He has a 2-0 record and a 1.75 ERA.
