SALISBURY — A Statesville woman has been identified as the person struck and killed last week on Interstate 85 after her vehicle became disabled on the highway.

Olivia Jade Wingate, 25, of Shiloh Road, was driving north near exit 74 at Julian Road around 5:15 a.m. when her vehicle broke down due to a prior crash and stopped in the roadway. The car, a Buick, came to rest in the second lane closest to the right shoulder.

At some point, Wingate got out of the car and was standing to the left of it in the roadway when a tractor-trailer, also traveling north, struck the back of the vehicle and hit her.

Wingate was thrown, came to rest in the far left lane and died at the scene. The tractor-trailer and Wingate’s vehicle traveled several hundred feet and came to rest. Both vehicles ignited.

It’s not known which vehicle caught fire first, officials have said.

The tractor-trailer driver, Ivan Milosavjevic, 31, who was driving for AAA Freight Inc., based out of Justice, Illinois, was able to get out and was not injured.

It is not clear how long Wingate had been outside her vehicle before she was struck. According to 911 communications no calls were made prior to the collision regarding an accident or disabled vehicle.

No charges are expected.
