Area Sports Briefs: Wonders sweep conference softball awards

Regular-season and conference tournament champion A.L. Brown swept the awards for MECKA softball that were announced on Monday.
Kaitlin Moore is the MECKA Player of the Year, Kaylee Cook is the MECKA Pitcher of the Year, and Scott Rodgers in the MECKA Coach of the Year.
Also making the All-MECKA team from A.l. Brown are Allie Baker, Ashlynn Stokes, Brandi Blackmon, Kelly Chrismon and Savanna Hagler.

A.L. Brown’s Damon Johnson, Jordan Reid, Casey Ritchie and Jacob Tuttle made the All-MECKA baseball team.
North Meck’s River Ryan is the MECKA Player of the Year, while Hough’s Nicholas Swiney is the MECKA Pitcher of the Year.

A.L. Brown’s Austin Coward earned a spot on the All-MECKA golf team.

A.L. Brown’s Kelsie Simpson, Avery Crowley and Addison Crowley are on the All-MECKA team for girls soccer.

In track and field, A.L. Brown sprinter Cambrea Sturgis was named MECKA Female Athlete of the Year.
Legion baseball
Mooresville Post 66 won at Cherryville, 16-1, in seven innings on Sunday.
Ian Perkins started and got the win.
Zach Little had four hits and scored four runs. Chase Covington had three hits and scored three times.
Jr. Legion baseball
Carson shut out Lake Norman, 4-0, on Monday.
Bryce Holshouser, Luke Barringer and Devin Gay combined on the shutout. Holshouser struck out four and was the winning pitcher.
Cameron Prugh had two hits. Daniel Leonard and Holshouser had doubles.
Carson plays Kannapolis at A.L. Brown tonight at 7 p.m.
Intimidators win
Zach Thompson pitched six strong innings, and Kannapolis used a four-run first inning to beat Lexington, 7-2, on Monday.
Kannapolis (18-26) snapped its three-game losing streak.
Kannapolis had 11 hits, including homers by Seby Zavala and Grant Massey.
The Intimidators continue series tonight at 7:05 p.m. Tanner Banks (6-1) will pitch for Kannapolis at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Adult indoor softball
Adult Indoor Softball at the East Rowan YMCA is open to all men and women, 18 years and older.
Cost: $250 per team
Games: Monday and Tuesday evenings at the East Rowan YMCA.
Season: Games begin on Monday, June 20, and will consist of a 10 game season plus tournament
To Register: All teams must register at the East Rowan YMCA no later than Saturday, June 11
Coaches Meeting: Tuesday, June 14, at 7 p.m.

• Baseball camp, June 20-23, from 9 to noon.

Regional baseball
Lander outlasted USC Aiken, 5-3, on Monday afternoon at Columbus State University’s Burger King Field to win the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament and earned its second trip to the A Division II College World Series in three years.
Brandon White recorded his 13th save of the season in relief of Will Jones.
Mason Dodd had the key hit as the Bearcats broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the seventh.
Pitcher/Catcher Camp
The 28th annual Piedmont Pitcher/Catcher Baseball Camp wil be held July 5-6 at Central Davidson High.
