Cannon School wins golf state championship

SALISBURY — Cannon School of Concord won the North Carolina Independent Athletic Association boys golf state championship here Tuesday at the Country Club of Salisbury.

Cannon won its second straight state title by 21 strokes over Christ School, by posting a 5-over par team school of 573 for the two-day event. Cannon shot a 288 on Monday and followed that up with a 285 yesterday.

Medalist Michael Sanders led Cannon with a brilliant 136 (67-69). Michael Childress, of Salisbury, had Cannon’s second-best score at 145 (72-73), followed by Landon Robbins 147 (74-73), and Braxton Tracy and Michael Baker with 149s.

Individually, following Sanders, were Ryan Gerard (Ravenscroft) with a 141, Bradley Calloway (Wesleyan Christian — 142), Kase Diehl (Providence Day — 144), and Childress. Those top five golfers earned All-State honors.

Team scores:

Cannon — 573, Christ — 594, Charlotte Latin — 612, Providence Day — 616, Charlotte Christian — 616, High Point Christian — 620, Durham Academy — 625, Ravenscroft — 629. Charlotte Country Day, Forsyth Country Day, Wesleyan Christian, Cary Academy, Metrolina Christian and Greensboro Day had no team scores.
