Area Sports Briefs: West falls in softball playoffs

Sierra Ghorley’s infield hit on a head-first dive in the sixth inning broke a 1-all tie, and top-seeded South Point went on beat West Rowan, 3-1, on Friday in a second-round 3A game.
West finished at 18-7.
Ghorley homered in the fourth to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead.
West tied the game in the sixth with two-out hits by Parker Greene, Peyton Greene and Mary Sobataka.
Sobataka’s double off the wall gave the Falcons runners at second and third, but South Point pitcher Jaelin Griffin got a strikeout to end the inning.

A.L. Brown won, 3-2, against Olympic in a second-round 4A state playoff game in Kannapolis.
Olympic scored two runs in the seventh, but the Wonders held on.
Kaylee Cook had three hits. Harlie Taylor drove in two runs. Kelly Chrismon drove in one.
Cook, who signed with Catawba, went the distance on the mound and struck out six for the Wonders (23-3).

Davie won, 3-0, on the road against Northwest Guilford in a second-round 4A playoff game.
Davie scored all three runs in the fifth.
Bridgett Tierney had three hits. McKenzie Barneycastle had two hits. Sierra Ferguson drove in two runs.
Davie (17-9) will play A.L. Brown at Kannapolis Middle School in the third round.

East Rowan YMCA
Indoor softball.
This fast-paced game puts a different spin on the game of softball and is full of fun and excitement.
Open to all men and women 18 years and older.

Cost: $250 per team
Games: Monday and Tuesday evenings at the East Rowan YMCA
Season: Games begin on Monday, June 20 and will consist of a 10 game season plus tournament

Mid. school tennis
West Rowan Middle won, 6-3, against China Grove.
Singles winners for West were Cyress Brown, Ben Baker, Parkston Myers and Gabe Coffield.
Doubles winners were Brown/Coffield and Trevor Mervine/Gabe Collins.

Intimidators
A pitcher’s duel Friday night at Municipal Stadium was settled by home runs.
Rhett Wiseman slugged a three-run walk-off for the Hagerstown Suns in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 4-1.
Tanner Banks had another strong start for Kannapolis (16-18). The lefty was perfect through his first two innings of work and did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fourth.

The Intimidators continue the road trip at Hagerstown tonight.

Catawba golf
Catawba golf coach Sam Gealy announced six golfers will be joining the program for 2016-17.
The three new players on the women’s side are Kaley Barts (Apex), Cox Mill’s Jaime Cassell (Charlotte) and Sarah Coltrane (Asheboro,).
The men’s team will add Mack Sheppard (Hickory Ridge), Jack Chatt (Matthews) and Joey Gugliotta (Raleigh).
Cassell was twice named conference MVP and had a pair of top 10 state finishes.
Sheppard earned all-conference honors at Hickory Ridge High School.

Spring Fling
On May 28, Kannapolis Legion will host three games at Northwest Cabarrus High.
Kannapolis will play Cherryille at noon.
Rowan will play Cherryille at 3 and High Point at 6.

MLB
NEW YORK — Chris Sale became the major leagues’ first eight-game winner, working quickly and efficiently in a six-hitter that led the Chicago White Sox over the New York Yankees 7-1 Friday night.
Sale (8-0) is the first White Sox pitcher to win his first eight starts since Jon Garland in 2005.
Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer in the third inning off Luis Severino (0-6), who left one pitch later with soreness on the back of his right elbow and was sent to a hospital.
