Area Sports Briefs: East, Carson baseball on road for playoffs

East Rowan plays at Ledford tonight at 7 p.m. in the second round of the 3A baseball state playoffs.
Seeded 13th, East (18-8) is expected to send Colby Myrick (1-1, 1.55 ERA) to the mound.
UNC signee Ike Freeman leads East’s offense. The shortstop has five homers and 24 RBIs and is batting .518.
Freeman is currently on a 19-for-29 tear and owns a 14-game hitting streak.
Ledford (21-5) is the No. 4 seed and has won its last five games.
Ledford’s Jonathan Turner threw a no-hitter in the first round in a 3-0 win against North Buncombe.
Former Catawba star David Thomas is part of the Ledford coaching staff.

Carson plays at second-seeded Marvin Ridge (23-4) in Waxhaw in a 3A second-round game tonight.
Marvin Ridge has won 12 straight games and is the defending 3A champ.
Seeded 15th, Carson will send sophomore Owen White (6-3, 2.14 ERA, 81 strikeouts) to the mound.
White (.337, 5 five homers, 23 RBIs) and center fielder Michael Morrison (.419, 3 homers, 26 RBIs) lead Carson’s offense.
Carson won a playoff game at Marvin Ridge in 2010.

Prep soccer
Salisbury’s second-round 2A playoff match at top-seeded Forbush (23-0-1) was postponed until Saturday at 10 a.m.
Salisbury is 18-3-1.

Prep softball
West Rowan travels to Belmont South Point for a 7 p.m. game tonight in the second round of the 3A softball state playoffs.
The Falcons (18-6) will be taking on the No. 1 seed, South Point (19-1).
South Point won its first 17 games this season before losing to North Gaston.

In the 4A state playoffs, A.L. Brown’s home game with Charlotte Olympic was pushed back to tonight at 7 p.m. at Kannapolis Middle School.
The Wonders (22-3) have a 17-game winning streak and won, 10-4, against Myers Park in the first round.
Olympic takes a 20-6-1 record into the second-round matchup.

Davie (16-9) travels to Northwest Guilford (17-2) tonight at 7 p.m. for a 4A second-round matchup.

Prep tennis
The Salisbury doubles team of Spencer Storey/David Derrick will compete in the 2A individual state championships today in Cary.
Storey/Derrick will take on Washington’s Zach Pagnani/Mac Skillen in the first round.

Intimidators win
Johan Cruz homered and Zach Thompson dazzled on the mound as Kannapolis (16-17) won, 5-1, at Hagerstown on Thursday.

Local golf
Wayne Crowder made a hole-in-one at Crescent.
Crowder aced the 143-yard No. 5 hole with a 7-iron. Ralph Shatterly witnessed the feat.

Cushwa Cup
Salisbury won its third straight Cushwa Cup for overall athletic excellence in the CCC.
