Area Sports Briefs: West softball tied for first in SPC

West Rowan pounded Concord, 11-1, in SPC softball on Friday and stayed tied for first with Cox Mill and Hickory Ridge.
Central Cabarrus is one game off the pace with two left to play.
Peyton Greene and Hannah Roberts combined on a three-hitter for the Falcons.
Parker Greene and Morgan Corriher had two hits each.
Parker Greene and Mary Sobataka drove in two runs each. Cam Nooner scored two runs.
Parker Greene, Sobataka and Ava Link had doubles.
Alex Linder, Taylor Martin and Roberts drove in runs for the Falcons.

Prep football
West Rowan offensive lineman Shane Barber will play football at Guilford.
The 6-0, 285-pounder spent time at guard and center as a senior and was All-Rowan County. Barber helped West Rowan to a 10-4 season.
He plans to major in psychology.

Prep soccer
Freshman Lelja Mehmedovic scored for West Rowan in Friday’s 1-0 SPC win against Central Cabarrus.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators spotted the Delmarva Shorebirds an early lead and lost, 10-4, on Friday in Kannapolis.
Yermin Mercedes went 3-for-5 for the Shorebirds.
Grant Massey went 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Intimidators
The Intimidators continue their four-game home stand tonight.

College tennis
The Catawba doubles duo of Jack Mordey and Mitchell McDonald was named second team All-South Atlantic Conference.

College track
Livingstone’s Garland Archie (North Rowan) won the men’s shot put in the CIAA Championships on Friday.
Archie threw 50 feet, 9 1/4 inches.
Livingstone’s Ebony Moore placed second in the wome’s shot put with an effort of 43-9 3/4.

Mid. school soccer
Sacred Heart won 4-1 against Salisbury Academy.
Caroline Cardelle scored two goals. Theresa Holland and Sutton Webb scored one each. Spencer Hansen led the defense for the Dolphins.
Sacred Heart hosts North Hills on Monday.
Erwin
Erwin’s girls won 4-0 against West Rowan Middle. Lani Isley scored three goals. Carleigh Perry scored on an assist by Isley.

Mid. school tennis
West Rowan won 8-1 against Erwin.
Cyress Brown, Ben Baker, Parkston Myers, Carter Jenkins and Trevor Mervine won in singles for the Bulldogs. Kevin Sullivan/Baker, Brown/Myers and Mervine/Gabe Coffield were doubles winners.
