Area Sports Briefs: Catawba baseball splits

Catawba’s baseball team split two games at Carson-Newman on Saturday.
The split was enough to win the series two games to one and it kept Catawba in first place in the South Atlantic Conference.
The Indians (27-16, 15-6) are one game ahead of Tusculum. The Pioneers had a weekend sweep of Mars Hill.
Catawba won Saturday’s opener, 7-5, behind Russ Weiker (8-2).
Chance Bowden (Salisbury) and Luke Setzer (East Rowan) hit three-run homers. Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan) went 2-for-2 and scored two runs.

Catawba couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead in the nightcap and lost 4-3.
Connor Johnson (East Rowan) started and pitched into the sixth. Heath Mitchem (Carson) took his first loss in relief.
Dylan Richardson drove in two runs for the Indians, while Bowden, who extended his hitting streak to 20 games, knocked in one.
Catawba is home against Barton on Tuesday.

College softball
Catawba swept at Anderson on Saturday, winning 4-3 in eight innings and 3-0.
Catawba (33-10, 17-1) stayed one game ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne.
Gina Gerone drove in four runs in the doubleheader and had the game-winning hit in the opener. Beth Ann Martin (South Rowan) scored the deciding run.
Carley Tysinger struck out 16 batters in the opener and overcame 11 walks. Anderson left 10 runners in scoring position.
In the second game, Tysinger (26-5) pitched a four-hit shutout and fanned 12. Gerone had a two-run double. Kristen Stinnard had a run-scoring single.
Catawba will host Wingate on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Prep baseball
Tyler Roberts was credited with a no-hitter by Davie County on Saturday as the War Eagles won at Alexander Central, 11-0.
Roberts improved to 3-0 on the mound for Davie (12-3). Alexander Central falls to 9-10.
Paul Davenport led the War Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Davenport’s hits included a homer and a double.
Craig Colbourne was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Ryan Harrell was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Stallions sweep
The Greater Cabarrus Stallions swept a doubleheader from Wake County on Saturday, winning 7-2 and 11-1.
AJ Knight, Dalton Lankford and Tyler Hartsell had two hits each in the first game. Noah Jarrett pitched a four-hitter.
Hunter Shepherd hit two homers in the nightcap. Caleb Threadgill homered and drove in three runs. McConner Wallace had two hits. Lankford drove in two. Seth Cauble tripled.
Camron Wallace was the winning pitcher.
The Stallions(20-5) play at Salisbury on Wednesday.

North Rowan
Brandon White pitched six innings in North Rowan’s 9-2 win at East Davidson on Friday.
Lee Sells pitched the seventh.
Jake Pritchard led the offense with five RBIs, including a three-run homer.
Joe Harrison drove in two runs. Henderson Lentz had two hits.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 10-2 at Hickory on Saturday.
Corey Zangari blasted his second homer, but the Intimidators couldn’t overcome Hickory’s seven-run sixth inning.
