More Area Sports Briefs: Catawba softball, baseball win

Catawba’s baseball team won two games against Shippensburg at Newman Park on Saturday.
In a 6-1 victory, Shaefer Shepard pitched into the eighth inning and fanned seven batters. Will Albertson hit a three-run homer in the first inning. Dylan Richardson also homered.

In an 11-2 win against Shippensburg, Catawba belted five homers, including two by Chance Bowden.
Bowden went 3-for-3.
Albertson, Luke Setzer and Jake Kimble also homered to back a strong mound effort by Russ Weiker.
Catawba plays a single game against Shippensburg this afternoon at 1.

Eric Tyler (South Rowan) had three hits as East Carolina opened the season on Friday with an easy win against Longwood.

Ryan Foster (Davie) pitched UNC Wilmington to a victory against Western Carolina on opening day.

Parker Hubbard (South Rowan) hit his first college homer for Brevard recently.

College softball
Catawba won two games on Saturday and is now 9-0 on the season.
In a 2-0 win against Augusta, Carley Tysinger pitched a shutout. Tysinger and Kristen Stinnard drove in runs.
In a 3-2 win against Georgia College, Tysinger again was the winning pitcher and fanned 10.
Stinnard went 4-for-4. Leah Huggins and Caroline Turner had two hits each.
Catawba plays Columbus State at home today.
