The Salisbury-Rowan NAACP is sponsoring a bus trip to the Historic Thousands on Jones Street rally in Raleigh on Saturday. The annual event is also known this year as the Mass Moral March.
The bus will depart at 7 a.m. from the parking lot of Walmart on Arlington Street. To reserve a seat, call 704-636-8461 by Wednesday.
The event in Raleigh is scheduled to begin with a rally at 9 a.m. at the corner of Wilmington and South streets near Shaw University. A march toward the state capitol will follow at 10 a.m.
The event coincides with the birthday of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and will take place three weeks prior to the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, where a group of more than 500 marchers were attacked by Alabama state troopers.
This year’s rally will focus on mobilizing to get out the vote. Other areas of attention will be the expansion and protection of voting rights for all, labor rights, education equality, health care for all, environmental justice, equal protection under the law, criminal justice reform, and “ending racialized police brutality,” organizers say.
