GRANITE QUARRY — The Granite Quarry Board of Aldermen will hold a joint public hearing Feb. 1 with the Rowan County Board of Commissioners on an economic development project.
The meeting will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 1 in the commissioners’ meeting room at the Rowan County Administrative Office, 130 W. Innes St.
Before setting the public hearing, the Granite Quarry board held a half-hour closed session Wednesday evening with Greg Edds, chairman of the Rowan County Board of Commissioners, and Robert Van Geons, executive director of RowanWORKS, in attendance.
Mayor Bill Feather, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Brinkley and Alderman Jim Costantino were in attendance for Granite Quarry, along with Town Manager Phil Conrad.
In December, commissioners met in closed session about the possibility of placing speculative industrial buildings on county land next to Gildan’s manufacturing facility on Heilig Road.
The roughly 30-acre site along the new Chamandy Drive lies within the Granite Quarry town limits, thanks to an earlier annexation.
Previous reports from the county’s end say Triad Commercial Properties, a developer, would be responsible for building the speculative buildings and finding tenants or buyers.
This new county industrial park straddles Chamandy Drive, constructed as a rear access road for Gildan. Granite Quarry officials hope to provide utility access to the industrial site and a new residential development planned for Faith Road.
In that regard, Granite Quarry has been working on financing and building a waterline along the new road. The overall infrastructure also calls for street lights.
