Lee Street theatre is pleased to present its 8th annual musical revue, “Broadway Lullabies.” Performances are Jan. 21-23 and 28-30 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 31 at 2:30 pm.
“Broadway Lullabies: Songs of the Golden Age” is a musical revue featuring the songs of Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and George and Ira Gershwin. This season’s musical revue features 40 of the greatest songs of the early musical theatre including “Blow Gabriel, Blow,” “Ten Cents a Dance,” “Puttin’ On the Ritz,” and “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” — all culminating in an exciting tap finale!
“‘Broadway Lullabies’ was created out of a true love for the music of the four greatest composers from the Golden Age of Broadway,” says creator and director Tommy Foster. “I wanted to create an evening of elegance that truly feels like a throwback to a bygone era. This music speaks to the very core of our souls and the lyrics are rarely given credit for their brilliance and ingenuity. My goal is that while the songs will be familiar, we will hear the lyrics in a fresh new way.”
“A lot of this music also compels you to dance,” continues Foster, who also choreographed the production. “So this year we’ve added that. Extraordinary dancers of Broadway caliber skill and actors who move extremely well round out this spectacular cast to whisk us away to another time.”
The cast features veteran actors from previous musical revues, as well as new faces we are thrilled to welcome to Lee Street theatre. The cast members are Kent Bernhardt, John Brincefield, Graham Carlton, Nick Culp, Meredith Fox, Carol Harris, Becky Lippard, Maggie Maxwell, Mary Ann McCubbin, Patsy Parnell, Lauren Stephenson, Ashley Keller Sumner and Wendy Piper Weant.
“Broadway Lullabies: Songs of the Golden Age” is created, directed, and choreographed by Tommy Foster, with musical direction by Matthew Michael Brown. Kelly Price is the production stage manager, with set and lighting design by Lee Street theatre’s technical director, Chris Speer. Managing artistic director of the theatre, Justin Dionne, provides the sound design, and cast member Ashleyn Keller Sumner choreographed the number “Too Darn Hot” and is the production’s dance captain. The production is sponsored by Bill and Laura Williamson.
The show runs Jan. 21-23 and 28-30 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan.y 31 at 2:30 p.m. All performances are at the Lee Street Theatre and Performing Arts Center at the Tom and Martha Smith Event Center, 329 N. Lee St. Tickets are $20+tax and available online at www.leestreet.org or at 704-310-5507.
