Jim Gobbel to be sworn in at Spencer Board of Aldermen meeting

Jim Gobbel, the newly elected mayor of Spencer, will be sworn in during Spencer’s Board of Alderman meeting on Tuesday.

Judge Marshall Bickett will swear in Gobbel and the new aldermen during a swearing in ceremony at the beginning of the meeting.

Mayor Jody Everhart decided he would not seek reelection, so Gobbel, who served as mayor pro tem for his last four years on the board, Alderman Scott Benfield and Bob Oswald were the three candidates who decided to run for the position.

Gobbel won with about 52.7 percent of the vote.

Seven candidates ran for six open seats on the Board of Aldermen. The new board will include Sylvia Chillcott, who received the most votes with 17.5 percent; Kevin Jones, who received 16.9 percent of the vote; David Lamanno, who received 16.7 percent of the vote; Mike Boone, who received 14.9 percent of the vote; David Smith, who received 13.5 percent of the vote and Howard White, who received 11.2 percent of the vote.

The board will also select the new mayor pro tem.

The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. in the Spencer Municipal Building on 600 S. Salisbury Ave.

In other board business, the board will:

  • appoint aldermen representatives to the North Carolina Department of Transportation Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Technical Advisory Committee and Technical Coordinating Committee
  • appoint aldermen representatives to the Centralina Council of Governments Board
  • hold a public comment session
  • discuss how they want to review town manager applications
