Area Sports Briefs: Catawba men lose; Catawba women win

UNC Pembroke pulled away late and beat Catawba 78-66 on Saturday in the SAC/PBC Challenge at Francis Marion’s Smith University Center.
James Murray-Boyles came off the bench to score 22 points for the Braves (1-1) . He went 14-for-14 at the foul line.
UNCP, ranked 11th, won the game at the foul line, shooting 32-for-36. Catawba was 13-for-21 on free throws.
Rakeen Brown and freshman Malik Constantine paced Catawba with 13 points apiece. Jerrin Morrison finished with 10 points, while red-shirt freshman Jeremy McLaughlin had nine points and nine rebounds.
Catawba was out-rebounded 44-31. The Indians shot a bit under 40 percent and went 3-for-15 from the foul line.
Catawba returns to action Wednesday with an exhibition game at D-I Radford.

Catawba women
The Catawba women’s basketball team held off Barton 86-78 on Saturday in Charlotte.
Catawba (2-0) got another big game from Bri Johnson, who scored 24 points.
Terri Rogers, who went 8-for-8 from the field, and Zhaquondalee Greer scored 16 each.
Barton put five players in double figures led by Tatyana Jackson’s 18.
Catawba had a 43-33 rebounding edge and shot 58 percent in the second half.

Catawba volleyball
Catawba closed out the regular season with a sweep of host Brevard in SAC volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gym.
The Catawba Indians won 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19 to improve to 15-14 overall and 12-10 in the SAC. The Tornados fell to 12-16 and 9-13.
Bri Howard put down 17 kills for the Indians.
Hannah Elmore (Carson) led Brevard with 10 kills, two blocks and two aces.

CIAA football
Winston-Salem State placekicker Will Johnson kicked a 23-yard field goal at the horn to lift Winston-Salem State to a 17-14 win against Bowie State in Durham in Saturday’s CIAA championship game.
It was the third CIAA title for the Rams (6-5) in the last five years.
Bowie State (9-2) lost for the first time this season to a C IAA opponent.
Racing
AVONDALE, Ariz. — Kyle Busch won yet another Xfinity Series race and immediately turned his attention to the big picture — racing for NASCAR’s top title.
Busch dominated again at Phoenix International Raceway, leading 190 of 200 laps Saturday.
