Prep Football Notebook …
East Rowan
Max Wall finished the season with 171 carries for 1,085 yards and is the county’s leading rusher and scorer (13 TDs).
Wall is a junior and has 2,632 career rushing yards in three varsity seasons.
Cal Hayes Jr. has held the school career rushing record with 2,698 yards since 2001, but that’s almost certain to fall on opening night of the 2016 season.
•••
DB Wesley Porter continued a recent surge with another interception in Friday’s 34-20 win against South Rowan. Porter moved into a tie with Carson’s Andrew Jerman for the county lead with four.
Porter also accumulated 454 yards in kickoff returns and 125 yards in punt returns.
•••
East (3-8) used five different punters this season. Injured QB Tate Houpe had the most success, averaging 33.7 yards.

West Rowan
Hickory Ridge rushed for 398 yards in beating West Rowan 28-21 on Friday.
West had allowed more than 200 rushing yards only twice all season, but Hickory Ridge back Jaylen Rudisell alone accounted for 206 yards.
West (8-3) hadn’t allowed that many rushing yards in a game in the last 20 years.
•••
Quarterback Kacey Otto continued his efficient season at Hickory Ridge. Otto surpassed 2,000 yards of total offense (passing plus rushing) on Friday. It’s the ninth 2,000-yard season in West history.
•••
Junior Kortez Weeks has a county-best 57 catches for 749 yards this season, and his career receiving numbers are 95 catches, 1,326 yards and 17 touchdowns.
While he’s only a junior, Weeks is close to becoming only the 12th Rowan County player to reach the 100-catch milestone.
West Rowan’s school record for career receptions is 112 by Jon Crucitti in 2008-09.

Carson
There’s often not much difference between halfbacks Austin Lear and Andy Lear. Both had six carries for 30 yards in a 41-14 win against Cox Mill.
•••
At Cox Mill, Brandon Huneycutt became the first Cougar in history to catch four touchdown passes in a single game.
•••
DBs Cameron Rayfield and Luis Cipres were standouts for Carson (7-4) against Cox Mill. Cipres had eight tackles, three for loss.
Linebackers Ryan Bearden (13 tackles, one sack, fumble recovery), Jacob McCurry (15 tackles, fumble recovery) were outstanding again on Friday. Linebacker Alex Deal also recovered a fumble.
Bearden’s fumble recovery was his sixth of the season, a school record.
•••
Coach Joe Pinyan praised the punting and kickoffs of Cole Howard. Howard also had a 20-yard run on a faked punt against Cox Mill.

Salisbury
Antwond Glenn finished the season with 883 rushing yards, second in the county, and finished his career with 1,825 yards.
•••
Salisbury (3-8) had 13 touchdown passes last season, but was nearly shut out through the air this season. D.J. Alexander hit Will Steinman on a bomb late in Friday’s 21-13 loss to North Rowan to break the season-long drought.
Three Hornet QBs combined to toss an unlucky 13 picks.

South Rowan
Punter Marshall Long will receive his Army All-American Bowl jersey today at 1 p.m.
Long’s 57 punts this season averaged 46.5 yards. He broke county records held by Boyden’s Bill Leonard and East’s Kim Arey and the school record held by Tommy Barnhardt.
•••
Tyler Rary had two touchdown catches in a 34-20 loss to East Rowan.
No South player had accomplished that feat since Josh Medlin did it against West Iredell in a 40-20 win in 2012.
•••
Brian Cagler, a linebacker who is one of the leaders of South’s defense, got some carries on offense on Friday and scored a touchdown.
•••
South’s 20 points on Friday were the most scored by the Raiders since a 35-34 loss to Northwest Cabarrus on Sept. 11.
•••
South (0-11) allowed 41.5 points per game this season but didn’t threaten the school record of 49.1 points per game allowed in 2013.

North Rowan
North (5-6) enters a tough Friday first-round playoff game at Winston-Salem Carver short-handed.
Linebacker Javin Goodine (shoulder) and defensive end Zion DeBose (concussion) aren’t expected to play against Carver.
Both went down in the final minutes of the 21-13 win against Salisbury. Goodine said he was injured with about three minutes left.
“Next man up,” North coach Ben Hampton said. “We’ll just have to see who steps up this week to take their place.”
Hampton is optimistic that if the Cavaliers can somehow get past Round 1, they’d have both standouts back for Round 2.
•••
Hampton said Carver is very similar to Statesville. That means a lot of team speed and an exceptional dual-threat quarterback.
North lost 35-21 to Statesville.
“The reason we play tough non-conference teams is to prepare for the playoffs,” Hampton said. “Having played Statesville should help us against Carver,”

Davie
The War Eagles (5-6) have scored nearly as many extra points on 2-point conversions this season (22) as by kicking PATs (25).
Quite a few of those 2s have not been routine. Quarterback Chris Reynolds was chased all the way back to the 27-yard line in Friday’s 39-19 win against Parkland before completing a 2-point pass to linebacker James Boyle.
Ben Ellis has added to his 16 touchdown catches with four 2-point conversion catches. Cooper Wall has caught three 2-point passes.
•••
While Ellis is having a phenomenal senior season — 82 catches, 1,099 yards — Wall, a sophomore is actually gaining on him in recent weeks.
Wall has posted four straight 100-yard games and is up to 59 catches and 975 yards for the season.
•••
Reynolds, a junior who has passed for 2,606 yards and rushed for 642 yards, will return next season along with the vast majority of his teammates. Davie is very young and won’t lose much. Even without Ellis, the War Eagles could be a legit CPC contender in 2016.
•••
Davie got a tough playoff draw — a No. 15 seed and a first-round matchup at Scotland County, a team many consider to be the state’s best.

A.L. Brown
With Jayln Cagle sidelined for the second game this season, Ja’Querius Bost stepped in and produced his fourth TD of the season for the Wonders in a 42-6 romp against Hopwell.
•••
A.L. Brown got sacks from some youngsters against Hopewell, including sophomores CC Huntley and Najee Williams. The Wonders have 43 sacks this season.
•••
The NCHSAA seeding process annually produces head-shaking results.
The Wonders who went 9-2 with losses to 4AA powerhouses Hough and Mallard Creek, still had to be seeded as a third-place team in the 4A bracket, so they are seeded below some second-place teams — T.C. Roberson (3-8 in a split 3A/4A league) and Southwest Guilford (5-6) — that had significantly inferior records.
The Wonders’ draw as a No. 12 seed is a road trip for a rematch with No. 5 Pfafftown Reagan, the team that eliminated them in the first round last season.
Reagan (8-3) was part of a three-way tie with West Forsyth and North Davidson for the CPC championship.
It should be remembered that seeds mean something, but not everything. A.L. Brown’s last state championship in 1997 came as a No. 13 seed and began with a road trip to Asheville.
•••
The Wonders threw for a season-low 29 yards against Hopewell, but Sandon McCoy pounded for 171 yards on 15 carries. McCoy surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
