Area Sports Briefs: Marchinko leads Carson to cross country title

Carson’s Zachary Marchinko ran 15:22 to win the SPC Cross Country Championships on Tuesday at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Concord.
Marchinko edged Hickory Ridge’s Alex Cornwell (15:22.5).
Carson won the team championship with a score of 37.
Carson’s other top finishers were Dylan Koontz (5th), Garrett Ingold (6th), Nick Cox (12th), Jonah Evans (13th) and Grant Doby (15th).
Northwest Cabarrus finished second with a score of 72. Hickory Ridge (84), West Rowan (97) and East Rowan (104) were next.
Sean Incardona (7th) led the Mustangs. Other top runners for East were Devaniel Dale (22nd), Chance Brown (24th), Ross Alexander (25th) and Jonathan Brindle (26th).
Leading West were Andrew Burgess (10th), Michael Anton (17th), Oscar Bautista (18th), Cade Harrill (23rd) and Luke Hager (29th).

Northwest Cabarrus’ Kara Dunkle ran 19:41 to win the girls title and led the Trojans to the team championship with a score of 53.
Central Cabarrus’ Alex Vandenberg was second in 20:03.
Taylor Wiggins finished third (20:17) and led Carson to a runner-up finish with a score of 188.
Other top runners for Carson included Olivia Gabriel (15th), Jesse Nichols (17th), Hannah Venable (18th) and Hannah Barringer (36th).
Cox Mill (101), Hickory Ridge (109) and East Rowan (117) followed the Cougars in the team scoring.
East was led by Faith Faller (5th) and Faith Blume (8th).
Josie Heglar (9th) paced West Rowan.
South Rowan’s Micah Helms was 22nd.
CCC cross country
Salisbury’s boys won the CCC Championships held at Boone’s Cave Park in Lexington on Tuesday.
Thomasville’s Chris Maxon was the individual champ in 18:45.
Salisbury’s score was 24.
Salisbury’s Matt Washko (3rd, 19:21), Alex Yang (4th, 19:43) and Keegan Dillon (5th, 19:49), Reilly Gokey (8th), Roarke Burton (9th), Sam McNeely (10th) an John Yang (12th) made All-CCC.
Other scores were East Davidson (66), West Davidson (68), Lexington (85) and North Rowan (109).

West Davidson won the girls team title with a score of 27. East Davidson (41) and Salisbury (63) also posted team scores.
West Davidson’s Patience Hunt won in 22:44.
Salisbury Ellen Simons (4th, 23:21) and Mary Kaufmann (7th) made the All-CCC team.
Prep volleyball
North Rowan swept Salisbury in a CCC tournament semifinal on Tuesday.
Makala Lytton had 12 kills and five aces for North.
Aiyah Farmer had 10 kills. Bil’lizah Connor had three kills and three blocks. Chevy Blaire had four aces and three kills. Navi Joyner and Kiara Davis had six digs each. Amarriya Harris had three consecutive aces in the third set.
Juliana Anderson had seven kills, four blocks and two aces for the Hornets. Makayla Dillon had nine assists. Kaya Twitty had six assists and three aces.
North Rowan advanced to a championship game today at 7 p.m. against top-seeded West Davidson.
Salisbury will take on East Davidson in a seeding game for third place at 5 p.m. The teams tied in the standings and split their regular-season contests.

Carson won 25-21, 25-10 and 25-11 against East Rowan in the semifinals of the SPC tournament on Tuesday.
Cox Mill won 25-11, 25-12 and 25-16 against Hickory Ridge in the semifinals of the SPC tournament.
Carson hosts Cox Mill today at 6 p.m.

Gray Stone won 18-25, 27-25, 25-14 and 25-19 against North Stanly in the semifinals of the YVC tournament.
Megan Frick had 23 kills for the Knights (17-2). Shannon Efird added 13 kills.
Caroline Cody had 15 assists and LeAnn Harward had 13.
Gray Stone, the No. 2 seed, plays top-seeded South Stanly for the championship today at 6 p.m.
Prep soccer
First-place Carson rolled 9-0 against East Rowan in SPC soccer on Tuesday.
Khalid Myers scored three goals, Colton Correll and James Keopaseut scored two goals each, and Ricky Maldanado and Cole Howard had a goal each.
Maldonado had two assists. Myers, Correll and Brandon Flores had one each.
Carson (15-1, 14-1 SPC) hosts Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday.
Prep tennis
Carson (10-2) won 5-1 at West Henderson in the first round of the 3A dual team state playoffs on Tuesday.
Carson’s next opponent will be Marvin Ridge (13-3) next week.

Price Hall of Fame
The J.C.Price School Hall of Fame paid tribute to the late Rufus Little and Fred Evans in a recent ceremony and inducted Joseph Johnson, William Boger, Larry Connor, Earl Blakeney,and Ray Reid in recent ceremonies.
7th-grade football
Erwin won 26-12 against Corriher-Lipe.
Issac Hinceman, Sammy Pinckney and Tahj Young ran the ball well, and the Eagles had a big defensive game.
Erwin is at Southeast on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

China Grove defeated Southeast 38-32 in two overtimes.
Christ Sanchez scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards. Ricardo Morales scored on a 6-yard run. Andrew Beaver kicked four PATs.
Offensive linemen Eli Spry, Sam Cook, Garrett Morris, Logan Cheeseman, Tyler Smith, Michael Gonsalves, and Ryan Woodman had outstanding games for the Red Devils, along with defensive standouts Gonsalves, Morales, Dawson Oliver, Colby Renkin and Jace Jones.
Local golf
Fifty GARS members played at Lexington Country Club.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Clayton Steele with a net of 69.05.
Low ‘B’ Flight player was Bobby Wagoner with a net of 66.07.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Bob Stepanian with a net of 68.79.
Low ‘D’ Flight player was John Rader with a net of 77.28.

College soccer
For the second consecutive week, the Pfeiffer’s men’s soccer team is ranked No. 1 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Pfeiffer (13-0) remains one of two teams in the nation that are unbeaten and untied. Pfeiffer has won 15 straight at home.
Pfeiffer averages 3.54 goals per game to rank fifth nationally.
Nathan Regis is tied for second in the nation with 16 goals.
College football
Western Michigan’s Keion Adams (Salisbury) had a big game in a 49-17 win against Ohio.
Adams made seven tackles. He had a sack and three tackles for loss.

College volleyball
Carson-Newman outside hitter Sara Fairley was selected as the South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while Catawba’s Kaytee Frabotta was chosen as the Volleyball Specialist of the Week.
Frabotta, a senior from Sterling Heights, Mich., helped Catawba to a pair of SAC victories as the Indians swept Newberry and Anderson. Frabotta averaged 12 assists per set, finishing with 38 against Newberry and 34 versus Anderson.
College hoops
Catawba basketball’s version of Midnight Madness, Catawba Chaos, will take place on Thursday night, Oct. 22.
NCHSAA
Julissa Quintanilla of North Duplin High School and Spencer Brown of St. Stephens won the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Quintanilla, a senior on North Duplin’s tennis team, wrapped up her fourth consecutive conference singles championship. Brown carried the football 28 times for 342 yards and scored five touchdowns, while completing 10 of 18 passes for 132 yards and two more scores in a win against Hickory.
