State fair fare always intriguing

What’s cooking at the North Carolina State Fair?
Well, the fair fare includes deep fried jalapeño pimento cheese and bacon hush puppies with sriracha bang-bang dipping sauce;
Murphy House’s Fry Me to the Moon, a deep fried Moon Pie, triple Oreo, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, Hostess cupcake combination slathered in cream cheese icing and sprinkled with Oreos and powdered sugar.
Granny’s Country Kitchen’s High on the Hog, a fried pork chop, is piled with barbecue and bacon, with optional cole slaw.
Also listed on the state fair’s website, deep fried s’mores and deep fried Pop Tarts, deep fried peanut butter pickle and deep fried bacon-wrapped Tootise roles.
Or the kids might like PB&J chicken wings or Amazingly Sour Blue Warhead candy apples.
For burgers, how about the bacon cheeseburger with mac & cheese — that’s right, mac & cheese on the burger — or the Garbage Burger which is a cheeseburger topped with bacon, potato sticks, barbecue and cole slaw.
Looking for something a little less heavy?
Uh …well, there are deep fried crab bites or sweet corn in a cup.
The Raleigh News & Observer picked some of their favorite foods, including the crab bites and pimento cheese-filled deep fried wantons. For something cool, they suggest N.C. State University’s Howling Cow’s new ice cream flavor lemon wafer, not to confused with Country Folks Creamery’s sour ice cream (sour in what way?). They also make ice cream with Carolina Reaper peppers, the hottest ice cream.
No word yet on how many dietitians and cardiologists will be contacted after the fair fare.
