KANNAPOLIS – Bi-annual hydrant maintenance is underway this month as Kannapolis Fire Department personnel flush and check the city’s hydrants.

Hydrants will be tested between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Any flowing of hydrants will occur 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Fire hydrants will not be flowed on Saturdays and Sundays.

“Through flushing, pressure testing, and basic preventive maintenance, firefighters make sure that the hydrants are in working order should the department need to use them,” said Division Chief Kirk Beard.

Firefighters will wear safety vests when they are working near the roadway. Citizens are asked to slow down when passing by a crew or if they see standing water on the roads as a result of the testing.

Water customers in the immediate vicinity of the work may experience temporary discoloration of their water. If this takes place, customers are advised to clear the pipes in their home or business by running all the water faucets for a few minutes, and to postpone washing clothes.
