Area Sports Briefs: West o-lineman Banks on Shrine Bowl squad

Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas rosters were announced on Monday.
The only player named from Rowan County and the South Piedmont Conference was West Rowan offensive lineman Hezekiah Banks (6-foot-4, 344 pounds).
Banks is the ninth West Rowan player chosen for the elite all-star contest since 2000.
The game will be played in Spartanburg, S.C., on Dec. 17 at 1 p.m.

Prep soccer
Carson’s soccer team rolled 5-0 against Central Cabarrus in SPC play on Tuesday and stayed unbeaten.
The Cougars (10-0, 9-0) got two goals from Colton Correll and one each from Khalid Myers, Brandon Flores and Ricky Maldonado.
Raunel Vasquez had two assists. Braxton Rogers and Flores had one each.
Carson has a big test tonight at Cox Mill at 6 p.m.
Cox Mill is in second place in the league, with its only SPC loss coming to Carson. A win would put the Cougars in command of the SPC race.

Salisbury clobbered West Davidson 9-0 in CCC soccer at Ludwig Stadium on Monday.
Landon Goodman paced the Hornets (12-0-2, 3-0) with three goals, and Josh Lynch had three assists.
Lynch scored first for the home squad with a 35-yard bomb on an assist from Bryan Fragoso.
Ahmedin Salcinovic scored on a helper by Lynch.
Kevin Flores got his first goal of the season, with Goodman assisting.
Nick Veros, a junior midfielder, got his first career goal on a penalty kick. Santiago Caballero, a sophomore defender, got his first career goal on an assist from Lynch.
Josh Faulkner, a freshman goal keeper, got his first career goal.
Assists on Goodman’s goals came from Cristian Uribe, Salcinovic and Lynch. Arturo Ramirez held the shutout in goal for Salisbury.
Next up for the Hornets is a road match at North Rowan on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Prep volleyball
Carson rolled 25-18, 25-14 and 25-12 at South Rowan in SPC volleyball action on Monday.
The Cougars are 17-1 and 13-1 in the SPC.
The Raiders are 9-8 and 6-8 in the SPC.

SPC leader Cox Mill (18-0, 15-0) stayed unbeaten by sweeping Concord.

Davie won 15-12, 25-11 and 26-24 against West Davidson in non-conference volleyball on Monday.
The War Eagles are 13-5 and 6-3 in the CPC.

Makala Lytton had 10 kills and 36 digs for the Cavaliers (5-12).
Aliyah Farmer had 19 kills.

Cox Mill’s Jaime Cassell shot 43.
Camryn Corriher’s 49 lead East Rowan.
Kendyl Gregory’s 52 led West Rowan.
Ellyse Scarborough shot 56 to lead South Rowan.

JV football
West Rowan won 12-7 against Carson on Monday.

College golf
Catawba posted a 614 score over two rounds on the opening day of the North Georgia Fall Invitational.
The Indians stand 16th with one round left at the 6,967-yard, Par-72 Achasta Golf Club. Jeb Bennett leads the Catawba contingent with a 151 total.

College football
Winston-Salem State’s Daveon Perry (A.L. Brown) was named CIAA Rookie of the Week.
He returned three kickoffs for 125 yards, including an 89-yard touchdown on the game’s opening kickoff.

College soccer
Catawba’s soccer teams will be hosting anniversary festivities during homecoming weekend (Oct. 23-24), celebrating 25 years for the women’s program and a 50th anniversary for the men.
Activities include a Friday night social, an alumni game and cookout on Saturday prior to the football game and the evening soccer doubleheader.
If you plan on attending the event, please RSVP to Nick Brown at dnbrown@catawba.edu. Alumni attending are asked to donate $25 to help with the cost of shirts for the alumni game as well as food cost for the cookout.

Mid. school tennis
Knox defeated Mooresville 7-2 on Monday.
Singles winners for Knox were Lillie Rusher, Anna Grace Woolly, Quinnlan Watson, Elle Kennedy, Meredith Burton, and Gabby Fisher. Winning in doubles was the team of Phoebe Hollingsworth/Natalie Lusk.
Knox will play at Corriher-Lipe on Thursday.
