The Rowan Redbuds Garden Club

A.L. Brown High School Class of ‘63 mini reunion

KANNAPOLIS — Celebrating 53 years, A.L. Catawba College offers choral concert Oct. 4

The choirs of Catawba College will present their first concert of the 2015-2016 academic year at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in Owmake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The program, “Out of This World,” will feature music with themes related to realms beyond our own.

A wide variety of musical styles and texts featuring the heavens, the moon and stars will be offered by the Catawba Singers, the Catawba Chamber Choir and Catawba Pop AC. The concert will also feature a wide variety of musical accompaniments including a percussion ensemble, guitar and bass, piano, celeste, and even wine glasses.

Catawba’s newest ensemble, PopAC, will premier two new arrangements written by fellow students Conway Hahne and Caleb Garner. Student conductors Robert Thornton and Hunter Safrit will also be featured on the program leading the ensembles in several selections. Many soloists drawn from the ensembles will also be featured in works for choir and solo voice.

The Catawba Choirs are under the direction of Dr. Phillip E. Burgess, assistant professor of music, and are accompanied by Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette.

Free ministers’ luncheon

The Ministers Association will hold a free luncheon for area ministers from noon until 1 p.m. Wednesday at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, 612 Mocksville Ave. The meeting is hosted by Dari Caldwell, president of the medical center, and James Cook, chief chaplain. The group will receive information on congregational health ministries, holistic perspectives and crisis intervention. There will be a brief roundtable discussion and a meet and greet. Ministers of all faiths are invited. To make a reservation, contact volunteer manager Jill Rabon at JARabon@novanthealth.org or 704-210-5157; or contact Chairman Fleming Otey at 704-640-0242.
