Davis Richards had a fine debut for N.C. State’s golf team over the weekend.
The freshman from South Rowan shot 70-74-75 — 219 and tied for sixth out of 81 golfers at Kiawah Island.

Gardner-Webb sophomore Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) shot 74-73-73 — 220 and tied for 48th in his first tournament of the season at Pawley’s Island.

George Mason sophomore Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 71 in the first round of the Navy Invite on Sunday and is tied for 11th place.

Davidson’s Alex Nianouris (Salisbury) shot 77-81-91 in his first tournament of the season at the Duke Golf Club.

College football
West Liberty’s Quentin Sifford (West Rowan) made eight tackles, three for loss, in a 50-27 loss to McKendree.

John Knox (Salisbury) made five tackles for Charleston in a 45-25 loss to Shepherd.

Coastal Carolina’s backup QB Michael Church (A.L. Brown) was 4-for-7 passing for 27 yards and rushed three times for 11 yards in a 41-14 win at South Carolina State.

S.C. State’s Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1.

Kicker Erik Amaya (A.L. Brown) helped J.C. Smith beat Kentucky State with a 41-yard field goal, five PATS, solid kickoffs and a tackle.

Virginia’s Keeon Johnson (A.L. Brown) had a 42-yard TD reception in a 34-27 loss to Notre Dame.

Charlotte safety Najee Tucker (West Rowan) made five tackles in a 34-10 win against Presbyterian. Khalif Phillips (A.L. Brown) had 53 rushing yards and a TD for the 49ers.

Adam Smith (Davie) had six catches for 111 yards and a touchdown as Guilford wiped out Methodist 55-7. Devin Mason (South Rowan) made three tackles for Guilford.

In Averett’s 49-28 loss to Randolph-Macon, Hobie Proctor (West Rowan) averaged 40.8 yards per punt, kicked two PATs and had a kickoff for a touchback.
Dontae Gilbert (Carson) made three tackles for Averett.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The team of John King, Tim Earnhardt, Jay Owens and Chris & Sheila Livengood took first place.
The team of Azalee Story, Harry Owen and Patrick & Sharon Miller took second. David Huneycutt won longest putt.

Catawba athletics
Catawba’s men’s soccer team won 2-0 against Belmont Abbey on Saturday night. Catawba (1-2) got goals from Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) and Belony Joseph. Christian Watts made four saves.
Catawba hosts Newberry Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a SAC match.

Prep basketball
Concord standout Ray Kowalski has committed to Southeast Missouri State.
