From staff reports
East Rowan’s volleyball team won 25-13, 25-23 and 25-14 at home against West Rowan on Thursday.
The Mustangs (6-2, 4-2 SPC) are tied for third place with Hickory Ridge.
“We’re playing more aggressively and we’ve been playing with more confidence,” East coach Sandy Basinger said. “We’ve had several matches lately where we were way down, but then we played outstanding to came back.”
While East won the first and third sets routinely, the Mustangs had to make a spirited rally in the second set. West (2-6, 2-4) led 23-17 before the Mustangs ran off the last 10 points.
Brittany Small, Jordan McCall and Avery Wright led the comeback. Small had three kills as East went from down 23-20 to leading 24-23. McCall served an ace for a 23-all tie.
“We kind of had some controversial calls that got into our heads and we got behind,” McCall said. “But we realized we were the better team and we started playing like it.”
The Wright sisters, Avery, a senior, and Olivia, a freshman, starred in the third set for the Mustangs, and Leah Wyrick had a steady service run to close out the match.
East has won four in a row since back-to-back losses to the SPC’s two undefeated teams — Carson and Cox Mill.
