The Rowan History Club will meet Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. for a program by photographer David Lamanno.

Lamanno has been practicing large format photography for 15 years with a focus on the wet collodion technique for the past six. In 2004-05, Lamanno participated in an independent study course at Penn State University documenting country stores in rural Pennsylvania. In 2009, he completed a wet collodion workshop at Project Basho in Philadelphia.

Gallery showings include “Music Makers” at the Looking Glass Artist Collective and “Regional Ruins” at the Center for Faith and the Arts. Lamanno has recently perfected a technique whereby a wet collodion tintype or ambrotype is made from a digital image. Some of his glass plates using this method are currently on display at a gallery in Chicago with an upcoming show in Alabama.

Lamanno will discuss the history of wet collodion photography as well as his recent experiences documenting historic places in Rowan County. After receiving a grant from the Rowan Arts Council, Lamanno spent part of the summer of 2013 exploring the countryside with a portable darkroom and antique camera making tintypes of the rustic places found.

The meeting will be held in the Messinger Room (accessible by elevator). Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, September-June. The Museum is at 202 N. Main St. Guests to the program should enter through the rear entrance.

A roundtable format will allow for a 30 to 45 minute presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The Rowan History Club is open to all people interested in the history of Rowan County. There are no dues or admissions fees, and refreshments are served.
