Unemployment up slightly in June

Rowan County’s unemployment rate rose slightly in June, but is still lower than June 2014.

The rate is 6.3 percent, compared to 6 percent in May and 6.9 in June 2014.

Rates increased in 95 counties. Gaston has the highest rate, at 12.3 percent. Buncombe County had the lowest rate, 4.7 percent. The statewide unemployment rate for June is 6.1 percent.

Cabarrus County’s rate is 5.5 percent, up from 5.2 in May and down from 6 percent in June 2014.

In counties surrounding Rowan, the rates are:

Davidson — 5.9 percent, up from 5.7 in May, down from 6.5 last year;

Davie — 5.4 percent, up from 5.1 in May and down from 6 percent last June;

Iredell — 5.8 percent, up from 5.6 in May, down from 6.3 in June 2014;

Stanly — 5.7 percent, up from 5.5 in May and down from 6.1 in June 2014.

Rowan ranks 51st in the state for unemployment.

Unemployment increased in all the state’s metropolitan statistical areas, such as Charlotte/Concord/Gastonia. Mecklenburg County had the highest number of initial claims in June, 2,610.
