Junior Legion Baseball: West loses to Davidson in state tourney

West Rowan couldn’t hold a 4-1 lead late and fell to Davidson County 8-4 on Sunday in the Junior Legion state tournament in Granite Falls.
It was the first loss for West Rowan (22-11) in the double-elimination event.
Davidson County is the only team still unbeaten. West Rowan, South Caldwell and Morehead City have a loss apiece.
West Rowan plays Morehead City at 1 p.m. on Monday. Davidson County plays host South Caldwell at 4 p.m.
West Rowan got a strong start on the mound from Brandon Walton.
Davidson County scored a run in the third and it stayed 1-0 until West Rowan put together a four-run sixth. Payne Stohlsworh singled in a run. Walton and Luke Waggoner drew walks that produced runs, and Olen Stamper hit a sac fly.
Davidson County, which shared the Area III championship with West Rowan, rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tanner Craft’s two-run single tied the game 4-all. Davidson County had six hits in the inning against Walton and reliever Cole Hales. Austin Ferguson had a run-scoring double.
West Rowan couldn’t score in the seventh.
