Area Sports Briefs: Honeycutt medalist for Rowan Amateur

Three-time champion Ryan Honeycutt led Sunday qualifying for the Horace Billings Rowan Amateur with a 69 and took medalist honors for overall qualifying for the event.
Logan Shuping and Keith Dorsett shot 70s on Sunday. Other top scores on Sunday: Abraham Post (72), Jonathan Waller (74), Andrew Morgan (75), Jon Post (76), Ben Rollins (76), Michael Dorsett (76), Carl Moore (77), Chace Jensen (77) and Randy Bingham (78).
Sean Kramer shot 71 on Saturday, while Nick Lyerly led Friday qualifying with a 72.
Corbin Hills
Seth Wyrick made his first hole-in-one on Sunday at Corbin Hills.
Wyrick aced the 178-yard No. 5 hole with a 4-iron. Witnessing the feat were Todd Wyrick and Samuel Wyrick.
Junior Championship
Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot a final- round 65 on Sunday to tie for the lead in the Trusted Choice Big I Junior Championship of North Carolina held at Mid Pines Golf Club in Southern Pines.
Lyerly lost a playoff for the championship on the second hole. He was five shots back of the leader entering the final round.
Lyerly’s blazing round Sunday included nine birdies and one double bogey.
As a top-four finisher, Lyerly qualified to play in the Trusted Choice Big I National Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas, on Aug. 3-6.
Concord’s Stephen Carroll shot 75-67, tied for for fifth and is the first alternate. Concord’s Walker Cress shot 72-71 and tied for seventh.
Warrior
Warrior’s PGA Junior League team defeated Piney Point 12-0.
Warrior is 3-0.
Scoring wins today in the match play format were Mitch Jeter-McGwire Owen, Ben Childress-Hank Robins, Andrew Coward-Luke Graeber and Will Fowler-Walker Hartpence.
The next match is Saturday at Piney Point.
Carolinas Amateur
In the Carolinas Amateur Championship in Greensboro, Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot a final-round 71 on Sunday.
He finished at 1-over 289 and tied for 47th.
Carter Jenkins shot 20-under to win the event.
McCanless
The McCanless Couples played a Texas Scramble on Sunday.
The first-place team was Chris & Sheila Livengood, Patrick & Sharon Miller and David Huneycutt.
The second-place team was Erick & Alex Miller and Gene & Mary Seaford.
Jimmie Jones won longest putt.

Junior Legion
West Rowan beat the Davidson County Braves 9-4 in Mount Ulla on Sunday in the opening game of a best-of-three, third-round series.
Brandon Walton was the winning pitcher. Cole Hales and Dillon Simpson had two hits each. Simpson and Luke Waggoner had two RBIs each.
West plays at Davidson County on Monday at 7 p.m. in Game 2.

Intimidators
For the second time in three games, the Kannapolis Intimidators put up double-digit runs.
Kannapolis beat Charleston RiverDogs, 12-2 on Sunday at Riley Ballpark.
Kannapolis (9-9 second half, 44-43 overall) secured its sixth consecutive road series win, taking three of five games in Charleston.
Kannapolis scored three runs in the first inning.
