Area Sports Briefs: Five Rowan girls make All-State

West Rowan’s Marissa Yow, Hunter Gibbons, Peyton Greene and Parker Greene and East Rowan’s Kaleigh Troutman were named to the 3A All-State team by the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association.
Yow, a catcher, is headed to Radford. Gibbons, a shortstop, is headed to Western Carolina. Troutman, a catcher, is headed to Lander. Peyton Greene is a rising senior, while Parker Greene is a rising sophomore.
Davie’s Sarah Myers, McKenzie Barneycastle, Jessie Beck and Makenzie Smith made the 4A All-State team.
Gray Stone’s Jordan Orick, Shelby Burris and Madison Hunter made the 1A All-State team.
Rowan Little League
Rowan Little League softball has three teams (7-8, 9-10, 13-14) advancing to state play.
The 7-8 team won four games in two days, beating King twice, including a 9-0 win in the championship game. Rowan will play in the state tournament in Franklin on July 11.
The 9-10 team will play in the state tournament in Wilmington, starting July 11, and is looking for a repeat championship.
The 13-14 team will play in the state tournament in Sylva on July 11. This is the first year Rowan has fielded a team in this age group.
The Rowan Little League 11-12 softball routed East Surry 19-2 in four innings on Tuesday to advance to the district championship game.
If they win the district, the 11-12 team will play in Washington on July 18 for the state championship.
Rowan Little League’s Dan Wales estimates that it will cost $20,000 to send three teams to state tournaments and $28,000 if all four softball teams qualify.

RLL is asking to receive commitments for donations by July 7. Levels of sponsorship are bronze ($200), silver ($350) and gold ($500). Sponsor names will be displayed on a banner on the dugout at every game.
• Rowan Little League’s 11-12 baseball team won 14-1 against East Surry on Monday with three pitchers combining on a no-hitter.
East Diamond Sports
East Rowan’s 8U softball all-stars finished as the Area 4 runner-up after playing four games Saturday in Monroe.
East Rowan defeated Union County North 17-7, fell to Union County South 16-5, topped Davidson County 11-6 and lost to UC South 16-3.
The wins were the first for East Rowan in all-star softball. East Rowan advanced to the Western North Carolina Babe Ruth 8U softball state tournament in Asheville.
East 8U baseball
East’s 8U baseball all-stars began the state tournament with a thrilling 8-7 victory over Porter Ridge Friday afternoon in Rockwell , but then dropped a 4-0 game to Indian Trail Saturday and fell to St. Stephens 21-11 to finish the tourney 1-2.
East 10U baseball
East Rowan’s 10U all-stars won the Area 3 championship with a 7-0 victory over Surry North on Sunday in Churchland.
East Rowan beat Surry North 11-2 Friday and no-hit Davidson County 10-0 Saturday.
East Rowan plays in the state tournament starting July 9 in Asheville.
East 11U baseball
East Rowan’s 11U all-stars won the Area 3 championship over China Grove 15-1 on Sunday.
East Rowan beat Surry North 7-1 Friday, defeated China Grove 8-3 Saturday, then dropped a 12-1 decision to China Grove Sunday before winning the third and decisive game.
East Rowan plays in Yadkinville in the 11U state tournament starting July 9.
Local golf
Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 6-over 76 in Tuesday’s second round of the North and South Amateur Championship being held at Pinehurst No. 2.
Edwards made back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes. He made eight bogeys and eight pars.
Edwards shot 77 in the first round on Monday.
He’s tied for 39th after two rounds. The final round of stroke play is Wednesday. Edwards tees off at 7:18 a.m.
The field of 96 will be trimmed to the top 16 golfers after Wednesday, and they’ll compete in match play.
• The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played a low gross, low net event on Tuesday.
First Flight winners: 1st Gross – Becky Isenhour, 1st Net – Azalee Story. Second Flight winners: 1st Gross – Mary Seaford, 1st Net – Monica Green.
Third Flight winners: 1st Gross – Norma Burgess, 1st Net – Sheryl Johnson.
Winner of low putts was Susan Morris.
• Fifty-seven GARS members played in their own foursomes at Rollin Hills on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Clyde Crawford with a net of 58.44. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Nelson Earnhardt with a net of 61.38. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Windsor Eagle with a net of

American Legion
Kannapolis closed the regular season with a 12-3 win at Winston-Salem on Tuesday.
Jackson Raper had four hits and is batting .427 for the summer. Cal Hubbard had three hits to back the pitching of Justin Bundy.
Kannapolis finished 5-8 in league play and will be the No. 10 seed for the Area III playoffs. Kannapolis will play No. 6 Kernersville in the first round.
• In other games on Tuesday, Davidson County routed Concord 16-3 and finished fifth. Stanly beat Mocksville 12-3. Mooresville won 7-4 against Eastern Randolph.
The Mooresville-Greensboro game wasn’t played and was declared a double forfeit.
• Playoff pairings will be finalized on Wednesday. There were several ties. Southern Rowan tied for seventh with Winston-Salem and Mocksville with 6-7 records.
The first round of the playoffs is best-of-three and will be played July 3-5.
Rowan County will play in the second round against the winner of the 8-9 series.
Junior Legion
Carson won 5-1 against Rowan County on Tuesday.
Cameron Prugh pitched six innings and struck out seven. Pearce Wilhelm had three hits and three RBIs. Brycen Holshouser and Maddux Holshouser had two hits each.
Chandler Lippard drove in the Rowan run with a double.
