Area Sports Briefs: Hayes advances

Livingstone graduate Quanera Hayes advanced to the 400-meters final in the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Friday.
Hayes had the seventh-best time on Friday with a clocking of 50.84 seconds and was one of eight women to advance to Saturday’s final.
Hayes will compete at 5:30 p.m.

Intimidators
The Asheville Tourists used a three-run sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie and beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 7-4 Friday in Kannapolis.
Kannapolis first baseman Alexander Simon went 4-for-4.
Thad Lowry (8-3) took the loss.
The Intimidators and Tourists continue their five -game series Saturday.

Junior Legion
Carson Junior Legion is 15-7 and 3-1 in league games after winning three of four recent outings.
Carson romped 12-0 against Stanly on Friday.
Brycen Holshouser and Luke Barringer did the pitching.
Pearce Wilhelm had three hits and three RBIs. Ben Shoaf had two hits and scored three runs.
•Carson scored three runs in the seventh to win 6-3 against Rowan County.
Brycen Holshouser, Shoaf and Chase Earnhardt had two hits each. Shoaf had three RBIs.
Cameron Prugh pitched a complete game for the win and fanned five.
Chandler Lippard and Will Brown had two hits each to lead Rowan.
• Carson pounded Stanly 12-2.
Sollie Holshouser was the winning pitcher. Wilhelm and Daniel Leonard had four hits each and both drove in three runs. Brycen Holshouser had four RBIs.
• In a 5-1 loss to Davie, Shoaf had two hits.
• Carson plays at home on Saturday against Rowan County at 7 p.m. West Rowan is at Carson at 4 on Sunday.

Local golf
In the eGolf Tour’s Mimosa Hills Open in Morganton, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is tied for 14th after three rounds.
Adams has shot 71-64-66 — 201 and is 9-under.

Wells Fargo Cup
The NCHSAA announced state champions in the competition for the Wells Fargo Cup for overall athletic excellence for the 2014-15 academic year.
Kernersville Bishop McGuinness took top honors in the 1A classification. Gray Stone was 12th.
Carrboro was the Cup winner among 2A schools for the fourth straight year. Salisbury was 10th.
Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons edged Waxhaw Marvin Ridge in 3A. East Rowan finished 14th.
Apex and Cary Green Hope tied for first in 4A.

Pro football
Danny O’Brien (Catawba) is one of the quarterbacks on the roster of the Ottawa RedBlacks.

College softball
Pfeiffer Sports Hall of Famer and famed high school coach Monte Sherrill has been hired to lead the Pfeiffer softball program. Sherrill was a baseball standout at Pfeiffer in the 1980s. He has a career high school coaching record of 753-60.
• Radford announced the hiring of Aileen Morales as its new head softball coach.
