Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly close in bid to qualify for U.S. Jr. Amateur

East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly shot 69-73 — 142 on Thursday and was 2-under in the U.S. Junior Amateur sectional qualifier held at Pinewood in Asheboro.
Four golfers shot 4-under to advance to the U.S. Junior Amateur at Colleton River Plantation Club in Bluffton, S.C., on July 20-25.
Lyerly tied for fifth and won a playoff for the first alternate spot.
Lyerly led by a stroke after the first round.
Cannon School’s Michael Childress shot 81-77 — 158 to finish tie for 49th place.
•In the eGolf Tour’s Spring Creek Classic in Gordonsville, Va., Will Collins has shot 67-70 — 137 and is in fourth place, six shots off the pace.
Frank Adams III shot a first-round 66 but a 76 on Thursday knocked him back to a tie for 23rd at 2-under 142.

Lentz update
Surgery went well for North Rowan basketball and baseball player Henderson Lentz on Thursday night.
Lentz’s family reported he was awake and alert.

American Legion
Randolph County rolled 10-2 against Southern Rowan on Thursday at McCrary Park in a rain-shortened game.
The game was halted in the bottom of the fifth after a wait of 90 minutes.
Randolph County scored six runs in the fourth inning.
Chase Labbe drove in both runs for Southern Rowan.
Southern Rowan (8-7, 3-3) goes to Kernersville on Saturday.
Kernersville lost 10-0 to High Point on Thursday.
• Rowan County is at home Friday against the HiToms Scarlets.

Wood bat baseball
Shaefer Shepard (Catawba) is pitching well for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League.
Shepard has an ERA of 1.12 in two appearances including a strong seven-inning start.
• Will Albertson, 40th-round draft pick of the New York Yankees is also playing for Asheboro.
Albertson is batting .217 with three doubles and four RBIs.
• Connor Johnson (Catawba) is pitching for the Holly Springs Salamanders in the CPL.
Johnson is 1-1 with 15 strikeouts in 12 innings. He pitched well for six innings in his last start.
•Carson Herndon (Davie) is pitching in the CPL for the Peninsula Pilots.
Herndon is 1-2 with 11 strikeouts in 11 innings.

Prep track
Carson’s Zachary Marchinko (2 mile), East Rowan graduate Marshall Shank (pole vault), Salisbury grad Jaleesa Smoot (emerging elite 400) and North Rowan’s Payton Russell (girls 400) will be among the competitors in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Competition is in Greensboro on June 19-21 at N.C. A&T.

Prep soccer
The site for this summer’s East-West All-Star soccer matches has been moved due to field renovations delayed by weather at UNCG.
The NCCA has procured McPherson Stadium at the Bryan Park Soccer Complex in Browns Summit for this year’s competition .
The matches will be played Tuesday, July 21. The women’s match begins at 6:30 p.m., and the the men’s match follows at 8:30 p.m.

SPC athletics
Jamie Billings was named as the new AD at Concord.
Billings had been AD at Hopewell High in Huntersville.
Billings replaces Chris Shinn, who took the AD job at Mount Pleasant.

Minor leagues
Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit his seventh homer of the season on Monday and had two hits on Wednesday for Columbus, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
He has 21 RBIs and is batting .262.
Sands’ most impressive stat is that he’s walked 23 times for Columbus while striking out only 18 times.
Sands has belted 144 homers in the minor leagues and six in the majors.

Rowan LL softball
The defending 7/8 year old District 2 and state champions will start district play at the Southwest Forsyth Little League complex on Friday night.
Team members are Andie Evans, Ashley Yang, Campbell Schaen, Emma Cline, Grayce Barber, Kennedi Fisher, Ellasen Nance, Taylor Keller, Caroline Snow, Ella Doby and Ella Cooler.
The manager is Steve Yang and coaches are Carey Barber, Chris Keller and Josh Schaen.
• Defending 9/10 year old District 2, state and Southeast Regional champions will start district play Monday night, June 22, at Salisbury Community Park on Hurley School Road.
Team members are: Bentli Meadows, Chloe Harris, Kenadi Sproul, Kendall Robinson, Brooke Kennerly, Ellie Goins, Ashlee Ennis, Allie Burns, Madelyn VonCanon, Emma Clarke, Karsen Simpson, Cailyn Winford, and Brooke Piper.
The manager is Johnny Meadows and coaches are Elizabeth Clarke and Garren Harris.
• Runner-up District 2 11/12 year olds will begin district play Saturday, June 27, at Salisbury Community Park on Hurley School Road.
Team members are: Kary Hales, Taylor Walton, Ellen Yang, Allison Ennis, Caylie Keller, Megyn Spicer, Liza Simmerson, Kaylin Dowling, Kali Morton, Caitlin Mann, Taylor Sanborn, Jaden Vaughn and Ellie Wilhelm.
The manager is Steve Yang and coaches are Rob Hales and Eric Dowling.

Baseball camp
The 27th annual Piedmont Pitcher/Catcher Camp will be held July 1-2 at Central Davidson High.
The camp is for ages 6-18. Instructors include Duke coach Chris Pollard.
