Police officials say a 16-month-old girl who was discovered to have suspicious injuries a few days ago has died.

Salisbury Police Capt. Shelia Lingle confirmed this morning doctors removed the child from life support around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Rowan County EMS responded on Wednesday at 10:22 a.m. to 1022 E. Lafayette St. in Salisbury where a child was unresponsive. The child was taken to Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast and later transferred to the Levine Children’s Hospital where she had been listed in critical condition.

Rowan County Department of Social Services also became involved in the investigation. Police have not released any further details into the investigation.

Lingle said investigators are awaiting autopsy results from the N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office in Charlotte to determine further action. Results should be available later today or Tuesday.
