In Sunday’s edition, a caption under a photograph at the John Steele House said President George Washington stayed overnight at the Steele residence during his 1791 visit to Salisbury. The 1799 Steele House did not exist when Washington was here. There is general agreement, though the evidence is not ironclad, that Washington stayed overnight at the Hughes hotel or tavern, which was located where the present-day City Hall stands on South Main Street.
