Area Sports Briefs: Catawba softball season ends

Catawba’s softball season ended with a 3-0 loss to North Georgia in the Southeast Regional I championship game on Sunday.

North Georgia (47-7) advanced to play the Southeast Region II Tournament winner.

Catawba (31-17) couldn’t break through against UNG pitcher Courtney Poole (40-3) and had only two hits. Emily Huneycutt singled in the third. Taylor Adams singled in the seventh.

Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger (27-11) allowed two earned runs and seven hits.  The junior eclipsed her own school  strikeout record for a season with 325 punchouts.

Stallions baseball

  The Greater Cabarrus Stallions lost 5-3 to Wake Homeschool and won 5-4 against Raleigh Homeschool. The Stallions finished the season 24-9.

Leading hitters against Wake were McConner Wallace and Isaiah Boger with two hits each.

Leading hitters against Raleigh were Boger with three  hits and Wallace with two. Sawyer Strickland was the winning pitcher. Hunter Shepherd earned a save.

Carson Junior Legion

  Carson Junior Legion sign-ups are  Sunday, May 17, at 4 p.m. at the Carson field.

Bring a birth certificate and a parent must be parent to fill out paperwork.

Tryouts are on May 17 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

West hoops camps

  There will be two West Rowan basketball camps this summer — June 15-17 and July 13-15.

Camp for (rising) grades 2-6, boys and girls, and  camp for (rising) grades 7-9, boys only, is from 9-1.

The cost of a camp is $50 and includes instruction and camp T-shirt.

Carson hoops

There are two remaining spring girls basketball clinics at the Carson gym for 5th-8th grade girls on May 11 and May 18 from 6-8 p.m.

• Carson Basketball Camp is set for July 6-9 from nine until noon.

Camp is for (rising) grades 2-6, boys and girls. The cost is $65. Contact coach Brian Perry for information at 704-855-5039.

Mid. school baseball

Mooresville, Southeast, West Rowan and Erwin advanced to the semifinal round of the middle school baseball tournament with victories on Saturday.

West Rowan Middle is hosting the tournament.

Minor leagues

Lexington started the bottom of the first with back-to-back homers and beat Kannapolis 11-7 on Sunday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The Legends’ 11 runs matched the most allowed by the Intimidators (12-17) this season.
