2015 Jabberwock crowns little queen and king

The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Salisbury Alumnae Chapter, presented tits annual Jabberwock event on Saturday, April 25.

Crowned as the 2015 Jabberwock queen is Sheenya Daugherty and the 2015 king is Demond Price.

The Jabberwock event was conceptualized in 1925 as a musical variety show consisting of skits and dances. The symbolism of the Jabberwock has evolved over the past 85 years, but it continues to raise funds for scholarships and other Delta sponsored public service projects.

This year’s Salisbury alumnae Chapter theme for the Jabberwock was “My Future is so Bright, I have to Wear Shades.” Contestants and participants consisted of males and females of elementary and middle school age who performed a variety of songs and skits.

The Chapter congratulates the contestants, participants, parents and patrons for supporting this event wh ich benefits the scholarship fund.

 

Rowan Redbuds

The Rowan Redbuds Garden Club met Thursday, April 23, at The Center for the Environment at Catawba College. President Kim Fahs presided. Dr. John Wear gave a history of the Center and led a tour of the building and the Fred Stanback Jr. Ecological Preserve.

Piedmont Choral Society chosen to perform at Purple Heart convention

The Piedmont Choral Society has been chosen to perform at the NC State Convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, where more than 100 Purple Heart recipients will gather on May 8 at the Speedway Club.

Over the past ten years, the choral society has raised more than $22,000 for local non-profits through annual patriotic benefit concerts.

Two Spring concerts scheduled

In addition, The Piedmont Choral Society will present its spring concerts on Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Vance St., Kannapolis and Sunday, May 17 at 3  p.m. at Forest Hill UMC, 265 Union St. North, Concord.

The concert features contemporary composer Rene Clausen’s “A New Creation,” with orchestra. Selections from upcoming performances of patriotic music, including the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” will conclude the event.

The choir is an all volunteer group made up of around 50 members, under the direction of Joseph Judge, with Dr. Don Simmons accompanying.

The All Patriotic Music/Benefit Concerts by the choral society will be held in late June. All concerts are free. For more information contact 704-699-6053 or kayy2000@gmail.com

 

Silver Queen Strollers celebrate 10 years

The Silver Queen Strollers Red Hatters of Miller Center celebrated their 10th anniversary at the Salisbury Community Center of April 18. Florence Perry served as the mistress of ceremonies. Queen Mother Evelyn Clayborn gave the welcome. Other members who participated in the program were Madagline Fox (solo), Vice Queen Mother Jessie Childers, Betty Hutchin, Idella Watkins and Rachel Hart (decorations). Joe Ponds provided the music. Photographers were Paul Tinsely and J. W. Cathcart.

The memorial service was given by Fannie Butler for the two members who passed this year, Iola Evans and Carrie Boler. Special recognition was given to Queen Mother Clayborn for her hard work with the club.

Special guests included Gloria Thompson, P. Paulette Wells and April Hawkins, former Miller Center director and organizer of the Red Hatters Club. Special thanks were given to LaKesia Brice, present director and van driver Jeff Watkins, limo diver, and Kelsey Funeral Home for providing the limousine for the Red Hatters participating in the Livingstone College Homecoming, MLK Jr. and Christmas parades.

Kannapolis History Associates hosts an evening with Mike Legg, city manager for the City of Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS- — Kannapolis History Associates hosts an evening of information with Mike Legg, city manager for the City of Kannapolis, who will give an updated presentation on Kannapolis’ decision to purchase the city from David Murdock. There will be time for questions afterward. The meeting is Monday, May 4 at 7 p.m. in the  A. L. Brown High School social room. Park in the lot east of Trinity Church. The Dancing Phalangies to host charity kickball

On Saturday, May 16 at Ellis Park, the Dancing Phalangies will be hosting the third annual kickball game for charity, as a part of the Jeff Gordon’s Kick-it for Cancer campaign.

The game will last from 3 to 7 p.m. and is a family friendly community-wide event. Proceeds will be going directly to Levine’s Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.

Community members are invited to participate.

The Dancing Phalangies was started in 2012 by a group of like-minded individuals to help bring our community together. The Dancing Phalangies is a group uniting people of all faiths, creeds, religion, or orientation in the common goal of building up our community.
