Area Sports Briefs: Kennedy honored; Wonders beat Concord

Freshman golfer Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) was honored as Gardner-Webb’s Rookie of the Year for all sports on Thursday during the athletics department’s First Annual “Webbys” ceremony.

The Hollywood-style awards ceremony —  complete with a red carpet —featured  award winners selected and voted on by Gardner-Webb student-athletes.

   

Prep soccer

Salisbury defeated Concord 2-0  in non-conference action on Thursday.

The Hornets (13-2-1) scored two goals late in the first half.

Salisbury’s first goal came on a free kick taken by Julia Honeycutt and finished by Ceci Cardelle.

Just before halftime,   Katie Bullock found Emily Mann in front of the goal  for the second score.

Salisbury got outstanding play from Gracie Nunez (filling in for injured Mary Seifert).

Next up for the Hornets is a Monday CCC matchup at North Rowan at 6 p.m.

College tennis

Christopher Newport freshman Alexandra Drye  (Salisbury) was named to the Capital Athletic Conference all-conference team.

Drye made the team at No. 1 doubles.

Drye and freshmen McKinney Harwood won seven straight matches at the end of the season and finished 8-2.

College baseball

Sunday is Senior Day, and a ceremony to honor Appalachian State’s nine seniors, including Noah Holmes (East Rowan),  will begin at 11:40 a.m.

Prep baseball

SPC champ West Rowan closed the regular season with an 8-7 comeback victory at Hickory Ridge on Thursday.

The Falcons trailed 5-2 early. Chase Garafola hit a three-run homer for the Ragin’ Bulls.

Austin Love keyed the victory with a great relief outing. Love took the mound in the third inning and struck out 12. He fanned six straight at one point.

Juan Garcia had three hits for the Falcons. Harrison Baucom drove in two runs.

West Rowan scored four runs in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Baucom had the game-tying hit, and the Falcons took the lead on a hit by Garcia.

The Falcons (17-5, 13-3)  will start play in the SPC tournament on Monday. They will be at home against the No. 8 seed.

East Rowan will host the tournament semifinals and championship game.

  The Greater Cabarrus Stallions lost 8-0 to Dallas (Texas) on Thursday in the Homeschool World Series.

The Stallions (22-6) were led by Hunter Shepherd and Isaiah Boger with two hits each. McConner Wallace had one hit.

The Stallions will play two games on Friday in Auburdale, Fla.

• A.L. Brown won 3-1 in eight innings on Concord’s Senior Night.

Clayton Gilmore scored   to give the Wonders a 1-0 lead and it stayed 1-0 until the fifth in a pitcher’s duel between Concord’s Tyler Thomas and A.L. Brown’s Daniel O’Kelly.

Concord made it 1-1 in the fifth.

The Wonders loaded the bases in the seventh but failed to score.

The Spiders also loaded the bases in the seventh, but Nathan Watson relieved and worked out of a jam.

The Wonders scored two in the eighth to win it. Kasiem Black, Kameron Sherrill and Damon Johnson had singles, and Casey Ritchie doubled home two runs.

Concord loaded the bases again in the eighth with one out, but Watson again worked out of the jam.

The Wonders play at Hopewell Friday at 6:30 p.m. to finish the regular season.

  

Mid. school soccer

Southeast’s girls defeated Erwin 2-0.

Scoring for Southeast were Lelja Mehmedovic and Sydney Borst.  Assists were by Kayla DeNicholas and Abbi Solano.

Slema Mustafic had the shut out.  Angie Diaz, Bri Saelinger and Daniella Arlotta were tough on defense.

•Southeast’s boys won 2-1 against Erwin.

Tony Figueroa and Lupe Bautista scored for Southeast on assists by Alex Erazo and Roberto Orozco.

Fernando Guerrero was stellar in goal. Kevin Vasquez, Alex Ortiz, Alex Mercado and Oscar Nunez were strong on defense.

• Erwin defeated North Rowan 6-1.

Landon Ketchie tallied 4 goals.  Sam Wall scored a goal and Ethan Gullet scored his first middle school goal.

Alex Kalogeromitros had two assists, Larson Waller had an assist and Ketchie added an assist.  Hunter Eagle made seven saves.

Mid. school tennis

Knox defeated North Rowan 8-0 on Thursday.

Singles winners for Knox were Roarke Burton, Luke Grenoble, Jander Rodas, Ian Walworth, Gage Gray and Michael Guerra.

  Doubles winners were Burton-Grenoble and Rodas-Walworth.

Knox will host Corriher-Lipe on Tuesday.

Local golf

In the eGolf Tour’s  Forest Oaks Classic in Greensboro, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is tied for eighth after two rounds.

Adams has shot 67-69 — 136 and is 8-under.

• The 34th Annual Edgar Welch Golf Tournament for Rowan County women will be played at 9 a.m. on May 19 and May 21 at Corbin Hills and the Country Club of Salisbury.

The tournament is open to all women with an established handicap at a Rowan club and anyone who has played in the tournament before.

Entry forms are available at local clubs.  The $60  fee includes golf, carts, prizes and the luncheon on May 21.

The format is net best-ball twosome.  Gross prizes also are awarded.

The defending champions are Bev Cobb and Eileen Full.

The tournament is played in memory of Edgar Welch.  Welch’s wife, Elaine, established the tournament in  his memory.

American Legion

Mocksville-Davie released its American Legion schedule.

The team plans to open the season at Rich Park with a 7 p.m. game against Winston-Salem on May 17.

Next is a May 19 contest at South Rowan and a May 20 game at Asheboro.
