Help Meals on Wheels of Rowan build a commercial kitchen

There’s still time to buy tickets to an event that will help Meals on Wheels of Rowan realize its goal of building a commercial kitchen to prepare the meals it delivers to elderly and shut-in residents around the county.

The Itchin’ for a Kitchen Gala will be Saturday, May 2, from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the F&M Trolley Barn, 125 E. Liberty St. in Salisbury.

A Kentucky Derby party will start the event at 5:30 p.m. and last until 7 p.m., with the race shown on a big screen. For an extra measure of fun, it wil include a Kentucky Derby-style hat contest, as well as raffles and dancing.

Dinner will be provided by more than 25 local restaurants, caterers, beverage producers, wineries and breweries. There will be a wide array of food, beverages and desserts for a taste of what Rowan County has to offer.

Tickets are $60 for individuals or $100 per couple. The gala is the kick-off event for Meals on Wheels of Rowan’s effort to raise money for the purchase of its new building, the commercial kitchen and other expenses. Rita Sims, executive director of the agency, expects the total cost to exceed $900,000.

“Meals on Wheels of Rowan needs its own kitchen to better serve the needs of our clients,” Sims said in a news release.

Sims said the agency contracts with two local restaurants to provide the 207 meals volunteers deliver daily on 27 routes throughout Rowan County.

“We can achieve a great deal of savings by consolidating our food preparation into our own commercial kitchen,” Sims said. “Plus, we can deliver a fresher and healthier menu by controlling the entire process. We foresee partnering with local farmers to provide the freshest fruits and vegetables.”

To buy tickets to the Itchin’ for a Kitchen Gala, send a check to Meals on Wheels of Rowan, P.O. Box 1914, Salisbury, NC  28145.
