Area Sports Briefs: Catawba ranked No. 1 in regional baseball poll

Catawba’s baseball team is ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Regional poll.
Catawba is 35-10 heading into the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
Following the Indians in the regional poll are North Georgia, Mount Olive, UNC Pembroke, Columbus State, Newberry, Flagler and Armstrong.
The rankings are the official poll used by the NCAA in the championship selection process and will continue to be released each week by the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee up to the NCAA Championship selections.
• Catawba’s Will Albertson, who leads the nation with 86 hits, including 23 homers, was named SAC Player of the Year and also is the SAC Gold Glove Catcher.
Catawba’s Craig Brooks was named SAC Pitcher of the Year and also is the SAC Gold Glove Pitcher.
Center fielder Blake Houston (South Rowan) and DH T.J. Wharton joined Albertson and Brooks on the All-SAC first team. Pitcher Shaefer Shepard was second team. Closer Ryan McClintock was honorable mention.
College softball
Catawba’s Carley Tysinger (21 wins, 253 strikeouts) was named SAC Pitcher of the Year and first team All-SAC.
Catawba third baseman Katherine Shumaker and outfielder Natalie Naturile were named All-SAC second team. Shortstop Gina Gerone was honorable mention.
Wingate shortstop Alexis Burrell was named SAC Player of the Year.
• N.C. Wesleyan freshman pitcher Logan Lowery (South Rowan) was honorable mention on the USA South all-conference team.
Catawba soccer
Catawba announced the hiring of Nick Brown as the new head coach for the women’s soccer program on Wednesday.
Brown, a former player for the Catawba men’s team, has been an assistant with the women’s program since 2010 and is the current head coach at Lake Norman High School.
“Nick has done an outstanding job stepping in during our spring season by coordinating our training and competition in exhibition matches,” AD Larry Leckonby said. “He has a great track record as a high school head coach and club coach in the area and will provide a smooth transition with our veteran team heading into next year.”
College track
Livingstone’s men finished seventh and the women finished fourth in the CIAA Championships held in Charlotte.
Quanera Hayes won her third straight women’s 400 titlein 52.04 seconds. She also won the 200 in 23.29.
Ebony Moore won the shot put with a school-record throw of 13.69 meters.
Garland Archie (North Rowan) was All-CIAA, placing second in the shot (15.32 meters) and discus (42.83 meters).
Daniel King (North Rowan) was fifth in the javelin (44.25 meters).
Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators won 10-5 in a Wednesday matinee against the West Virginia Power.
Chris Curley hit a three-run homer in the third to put the Intimidators in command. Jordan Guerrero (2-0) had another strong start in front of 4,549 screaming fans.
James Baldwin debuted with a two-run homer.
The Intimidators start a four-game series at Hickory on Thursday.
Prep tennis
Carson’s Marshall Wood was the SPC tournament singles champion on Wednesday.
Wood won against teammate Graham Purcell in the final. Both qualified for regional play.
• Salisbury’s team of Spencer Storey- David Derrick defeated teammates Hunter Carlton-Mathias Decomarmond for the Central Carolina Conference doubles title 6-0, 6-3.
SHS’ Matt Sukkassem defeated teammate Ben Roy for third place in singles. All six Hornets are regional qualifiers.
Salisbury will play its first dual team playoff match on Tuesday at home.
Prep golf
Salisbury shot 335 and won the CCC tournament on Wednesday, holding off West Davidson (339) and East Davidson (342).
Teams played two nine-hole matches at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Salisbury’s Christopher Queen shot 80 and was medalist. Other scorers for the Hornets were Gabe Steinman (84), Alex Antosek (84) and Abraham Post (90).
Other scores were North Rowan (420), Lexington (438) and Thomasville (495).
Will Anthony shot 89 for the Cavaliers.
Prep soccer
Carson’s girls won 4-1 against West Rowan in SPC soccer on Wednesday.
Sarah Safrit, Cierra Josey, Hayat Myers, and Sarah Musselwhite scored the goals for the Cougars (9-2).
Defensive leaders for the Cougars were Mia Trexler, Kylie Cox, and Alex Allen.
Hannah Smith and Cassie Howard were other standouts.
Carson will host Northwest Cabarrus on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
• Salisbury won 4-1 against Lexington in CCC soccer on Wednesday.
Ceci Cardelle scored two goals for the Hornets, while Katie Bullock, and Julia Honeycutt had one each.
Honeycutt, Adna Music, and Emily Capito had assists.
Salisbury (12-2, 6-1 CCC) hosts first-place West Davidson on Tuesday.
• Gray Stone won 9-0 against North Stanly on Wednesday.
Annie Habeeb had four assists. Laurie Fogleman scored three goals.
Prep baseball
East Rowan rallied to beat Northwest Cabarrus 9-4 in SPC baseball on Wednesday.
Tyler Scruggs produced a key hit with the Mustangs trailing 4-1. Scruggs knocked in two, and the tying run scored when the ball got away on a close play at the plate.
With the score 4-all in the sixth, Jackson Justus hit a grand slam for the Mustangs.
Justus’ blow made a winner of East Rowan starter Logan Towne. Alec Hamilton was strong on the mound for two innings.
• Salisbury won 14-4 against North Hills on Wednesday at Robertson Stadium.
The Hornets plated 12 runs in the first two innings before winning in five.
“We scored early, but after that North Hills settled down and held us to just two runs over the last three innings,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said. “North Hills showed a lot of heart after getting down, and I thought our guys played well defensively.”
Alex Link, Andrean Joyner and Zack Bates had two hits each. Cameron McClendon drove in three runs.
Bates was the winning pitcher.
Matt Long had two hits for the Eagles.
Salisbury is at home Friday at 7 p.m. against Thomasville.
• A.L. Brown scored in the seventh inning and won 3-2 in MECKA baseball against Mallard Creek on Wednesday.
Matt Brown pitched six strong innings and fanned nine. Jordan Reid got the win.
Mid. school tennis
Erwin’s boys beat Corriher-Lipe 9-0 for their fourth victory.
Winners in singles and doubles for the Eagles were Kevin Agner, Nick Shoemaker, Alex Freeman, Drew Walker, Lucas Hardin, and Billy McGee.
• West Rowan won 8-1 against North Rowan.
Singles winners for the Bulldogs were Duane Bowers, T.J. Smith, Carter Jenkins, Cyress Brown and Drake Martin.
Doubles winners were Alex Keadle-Gavin Coffield and Trevor Mervine- Brandon Richmond.
• Salisbury Academy won 6-3 against Sacred Heart.
Mitch Jeter, Hank Robins, Archie Dees and George Fisher won singles matches for the Jaguars.
Dees-Fisher and Jeter-Robins won doubles.
Winning for Sacred Heart were Ben Childress, Sean Archer in singles and Archer-Childress in doubles.
• Knox defeated Mooresville 7-2.
Singles winners for Knox were Roarke Burton, Luke Grenoble, Ethan McGee, Blake Clark and Jander Rodas.
Doubles winners for Knox were Burton-Grenoble and McGee-Clark.
Mid. school soccer
Southeast’s girls won 5-1 against West Rowan.
Adamaris Hidalgo scored two goals for the Patriots (4-0-1), and Lelja Mehmedovic, Taylor Conrad and Abbi Solano.
Assists were by Mehmedovic, Solano and Taylor Jones. Defense was led by Taylor Jones, Brianna Saelinger and Kira Cornelius. Skylar Smith was strong in goal.
• Southeast’s boys team won 5-0 against West Rowan.
Scoring for Southeast were Lupe Bautista with two goals, and Tony Figueroa, Edwing Sanchez and Pedro Cruz with one each.
Kevin Vasquez assisted on three goals. Fernando Guerrero had the shutout. Alex Ortiz, Alex Mercardo were standouts.
Mid. school baseball
Southeast beat West Rowan 16-3 on Wednesday.
The winning pitcher was Daniel Durham.
Durham and Cole Hales had three hits each. Luke Barringer homered. Barringer and Garrett Alewine had two hits.
Southeast hosts Corriher Lipe on Thursday, and West Rowan plays Erwin.
Local golf
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is tied for the first round lead in the eGolf Tour’s Sedgefield Classic.
