Rodgers Park to hold Planting Party for community garden

KANNAPOLIS — Rodgers Park Reformed Church has started a new charity project called Rodgers Park Reformed Gardens.

The goal is to turn approximately two acres of the  campus into a garden producing healthy food that will be donated to local food pantries and people in need.

The church will hold its first Planting Party at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 25. Anyone wishing to help is welcome.

Gethsemane choir to celebrate in concert

The Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church Gospel Choir will celebrate their 46th Anniversary at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Guest musicians George Butler and Ernestine Ingram will participate as the choir celebrates in concert with a reunion of former members and musicians.

The choir is under the direction of Milton Griffith, Brian Melton and Thelma Cuthbertson.

Cornerstone Church hosts Clint Brown

Cornerstone Church will host pastor, singer, and songwriter Clint Brown on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Brown can best be described as a modern day David who is synonymous with praise and worship as well as gospel music around the world. Brown has written over 400 songs, some translated into five different languages, and released over 20 albums.

Kern to preach at Spencer Presbyterian

The Rev. Dr. Sandra Kern will be guest preacher at Spencer Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. worship Sunday.

Before retiring, Kern served churches in North Carolina and Texas, most recently Thyatira Presbyterian Church in Mill Bridge.

Word of Life choir to host musical program

The Gospel Choir of Word of Life Family Worship Center will host a Choir and Musical Program on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Special guests for the program are: Unleashed Praise of Steele Creek AME Zion Church in Charlotte, under the direction of Mark Chambers.

The Makupson Sisters of Thomasville and Jabari Samolu of Salisbury will also provide music.

The Word of Life Gospel Choir will also minister in music, under the direction of Pamela Starks and Sir Davis.

‘God’s Not Dead’ to be shown at Trading Ford

Present-day college freshman and devout Christian Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper), finds his faith challenged on his first day of philosophy class in the movie, “God’s Not Dead,” to be shown 6 p.m. Sunday at Trading Ford Baptist Church.

Wheaton runs into a dogmatic and argumentative professor who tells students they will need to disavow, in writing, the existence of God  or face a failing grade.

Josh finds himself at a crossroads, having to choose between his faith and his future. Josh refuses, and his professor challenges him to prove God’s existence or fail his class. Come find out about Josh’s argument and how it influences students and teachers alike.

The movie will be shown in the Worship Center, free of charge. Concessions will be available.

  

Livingstone Prayer Meeting Choir reunion

The Livingstone College Prayer Meeting Choir Alumni Reunion will be held Friday-Sunday, April 24-26, on the campus of Livingstone College.

The choir, founded by the late Rev. Willie L. Aldrich and others in 1960, is celebrating its 55th anniversary. Alumni from across the country will be traveling to the campus.

The Prayer Meeting Choir played a major part in the religious life of the college for over 40 years, while Reverend Aldrich served as the advisor for decades.

The choir provided music for the Wednesday night prayer services on the campus and traveled extensively throughout North Carolina and the United States sharing a “Message in Song.”

Reunion activities will take place at the W.J. Walls Center on Friday and Saturday, and a reunion concert will be held on Sunday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m. in the Little Theater of Tubman Building. The concert is free and open to the public.

Special guests will be the current Livingstone College Gospel Choir, with the  Rev. Owen Forbes serving as the advisor.

A memorial fund will be set up in the name of the Rev. Willie L. Aldrich. This gift will be awarded to Livingstone College students in the religious life and music majors and to students at Hood Theological Seminary, where Aldrich served as head librarian for many years.

A DVD will be recorded and available for order. Proceeds of the DVD sales will go to the memorial fund.

  

Mount Zion sermon series continues

CHINA GROVE – During the 11 a.m. service Sunday, the Rev. Mark L. Burns will continue his sermon series on “Resurrection Women.”

Following worship the Vans Committee will host their annual Country Ham Dinner, with green beans, mashed potatoes, corn and desserts, in the New Building with all proceeds going to the New Construction Fund.

Free Worship Arts Conference coming up

Catawba College Worship Arts is sponsoring a two-day Worship Arts Conference April 24 and  25 at Life Church, 710 Jake Alexander Blvd. W., in Salisbury.

The free event features sessions entitled Tips for Tight Teams, Praise Band Basics, Worship Guitar, Technology in Worship and Creative Worship Planning.

A Night of Worship opens the conference beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and will feature guest artist Sandy Hoffman and the Catawba Praise Bands.

The conference takes place between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Saturday, April 25.

Hoffman will lead keynote sessions, as well as Worship Guitar sessions.  Hoffman is the author of the “Tips for Tight Teams” book published by Hal Leonard Publishing.  A featured instructor at the Youth with a Mission Schools of Worship and Schools of Music in Missions worldwide, he also writes a regular column called “Tips for Tight Teams” for Worship Musician Magazine.

Other conference include:

• John Kale of Life Church, leading the sessions on Praise Band Basics and Technology in Worship.

• Steve Hargett of Concord First Assembly, leading Creative Worship Planning.

An open panel lunch session entitled Implementing Contemporary Worship: The Dialog Between Pastor and Musician, will be moderated by Dr. Phillip Burgess, director of choral activities at Catawba College and organist/choirmaster at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Salisbury.

The panel  includes Billy Rollins, the Salisbury Campus pastor of The Refuge; David Puleo, worship pastor of The Refuge; Dr. Jim C. Dunkin, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church; and John Stafford, director of music ministries at First Presbyterian Church.

Gospel Plowboys at Safe Harbor Baptist

The Gospel Plowboys will celebrate their homecoming by singing Sunday morning at Safe Harbor Baptist Church, 270 Dunns Mountain Church Road.

The singing starts at 10:30 am, followed by a message from Pastor Josh Montgomery and finishing up with dinner on the grounds. Everyone is welcomed.

The United Ministerial Alliance will host a joint fellowship service at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Baptist Church, 410 Hawkinstown Road.

Spring Gospel Jubilee Concert at Price Post

A Spring Gospel Jubilee Concert will be held at J.C. Price American Legion Post 107, 1433 Old Wilkesboro Road, on May 23 at 4 p.m.

Admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

The even will feature the one-woman Christian monologue, “The Conversation” by Sister Dawn Pettus, with Tribute Emcee Sister Kei-Kei Gilchrist.

Trinity Presbyterian ‘Women in White’

The Presbyterian Women of Trinity Presbyterian Church will celebrate “Women In White” on Sunday at 5 p.m.

The theme is “One Body – One Spirit,” with  speaker Betty Agnew-Wasson of Statesville,  a retired chief warrant officer. She served 33 years in the United States Army as a human resource officer. She attends Calvary Presbyterian Church and is currently an ordained elder, moderator of the Trustee Board, a member of the senior and gospel choir, head of the kitchen committee, member of the Evangelism committee.

First Calvary Baptist  Gospel Explosion

First Calvary Baptist Church is hosting a Gospel Music Explosion next Saturday, April 25, at 5 p.m.

The program is being held in memory of its founder, the late Charles McGee, who sponsored the event annually as a part of First Calvary’s Gospel Choir Anniversary Celebration.

McGee was known throughout Salisbury- Rowan and surrounding counties for his personal ministry through music and as a member of several musical groups.

Participants in Saturday’s program include The Echoes for Christ, Unity in Praise, Messengers for Christ, Keith Holland and Friends N Christ.

A devoted member of First Calvary, McGee served on the Deacon and Trustee Boards, and was a member of the Men’s, Adult and Gospel choirs. He worked with youth sports leagues for many years and received several awards, including the Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Humanitarian Award.

This annual tribute to his memory is free and family friendly.

Pastor celebrates 18 years at Calvary

Calvary Baptist Church will pay tribute to Pastor and Jackie Cockerham Sunday in honor of their 18th anniversary at the church.

They came to Calvary Baptist Church in 1997 on the first Sunday in April.  Since that time, the church has grown, gone through many changes, bought 13 acres of property, bought the house next door, built an addition and recently completed a new multi-purpose building now serving as an auditorium.

The church will honor the Cockerhams during the 11 a.m. worship.

Gethsemane Church Missions Workshop

The Missionary Ministry of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, 719 S. Caldwell St., will host its 2015 Mission Conference on the theme of “God’s Servant Transitioning Into Action.”

Services begin Friday, April 24, at 7 p.m. with the 100 Women In Red concert under the direction of Milton Griffith.

On Saturday, April 25, the morning begins at 8:30 with registration and continental breakfast, followed by general  assembly, workshops for adults and children and lunch.

On Sunday, April 26, the Rev. Linda D. Inman, will close the conference with a message at 11 a.m.

Inman, a native of Chadbourn, holds a bachelor and master of science degrees from North Carolina A&T State University. She is a member of the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Greensboro.
