Jean Little of Salisbury provided this photograph related to the former Ellis, Mangum and Fair Funeral Home, which was established on West Horah Street in 1937 by C.A. Ellis, T.V. Mangum and the Rev. J.C. Fair. By the time of this photo — the date is not known — Sadie Fair, standing in front of the car, was the co-owner and operator. Sadie Fair was Little’s grandmother. Also in the photograph are Avis Fair Wilkins Monroe, receptionist and administrative assistant, and Annie Ellis, the other co-owner and operator. Avis Fair Wilkins Monroe, who recently died at the age of 104, was Little’s mother and the Livingstone College graduate was well-known in the community as a teacher, entrepreneur and, near her retirement, as the receptionist and switchboard operator at the college. Today’s Mitchell and Fair Funeral Service does business at 418 S. Craige St.
