Basketball: Schedules change for CCC, SPC tournaments

Published 4:50 pm Monday, February 16, 2015

The snow and ice coming to the area forced the Central Carolina and South Piedmont conferences to amend their basketball tournament schedules.

All after-school activities Monday for Rowan-Salisbury Schools were called off. The schools and district offices will be closed Tuesday, which means no games or practices.

The first round of the CCC tournament will be Wednesday at the higher seed. The girls semifinal on Thursday is at East Davidson, and the boys semifinal is at Lexington.

The tournament championship is scheduled for Friday at Lexington.

North Rowan, the No. 1 boys seed, and Lexington, the boys No. 2 seed, both have first-round byes. East Davidson and North Rowan — the top two girls teams from the league, respectively — also have first-round byes.

The No. 3 Salisbury boys take on No. 6 East Davidson on Wednesday. The No. 4 Salisbury girls square off with No. 5 Lexington at home.

The SPC is taking a play-it-by-ear approach to scheduling the tournament. There was talk about the tournament playing the first-round games at Cox Mill and Hickory Ridge. Then the tournament could move to the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds for the semifinals on Thursday.

The championship games will be at Hickory Ridge.

The top seed in the boys tournament belongs to Cox Mill, and Hickory Ridge is seeded second. South Rowan owns the No. 1 seed in the girls tournament with East Rowan being No. 2.

The original plan was to play the first-round games Tuesday at the higher seeds with Hickory Ridge hosting the semifinals and finals. The semifinals were scheduled to start Wednesday, and the championship game is Friday.

The weather could affect the schedule for this week’s state wrestling tournament, slated to start Thursday, in Greensboro as well as the seeding for state basketball playoffs. Members of the state athletic association must have their conference basketball tournaments finished Friday so the association can seed the state playoffs Saturday.

The association emailed athletic directors saying a decision will be made by noon Wednesday if anything changes with the scheduling for basketball seeding or the wrestling tournament.
