SPENCER — East Davidson weathered foul trouble to its stars and stayed unbeaten with a 45-33 win at North Rowan on Friday.
Guard Madi Hallman (19 points) and post player Bailey Plummer had to watch a lot of the second half seated next to coach Don Corry, but the Golden Eagles (22-0, 8-0 CCC) got enough contributions from other players to secure the league championship.
“I feel like we missed an opportunity to tie them for first place and share the conference championship,” North Rowan coach Brian Lytton said. “In that third quarter, with both their big scorers sitting, we didn’t take advantage.”
The Cavaliers (11-6, 6-2 CCC) played again without 1,000-point scorer Demeria Robinson, but their effort was spirited. Aliyah Farmer (12 points), Brianna White (eight) and Egypt Alexander (five) battled hard on the glass, neutralized the much taller Plummer and got her in foul trouble.
“We’ve gotten three fouls on Plummer in the first half both times we’ve played them,” Lytton said. “Defensively we did well, but you won’t beat many people scoring 33.”
North Rowan shot woefully from outside and that hurt. Special Washington’s second-quarter 3-pointer was the only one the Cavaliers made. North Rowan trailed 23-16 at halftime.
North Rowan was only down 34-27 late in the third quarter, but East Davidson’s Miranda Cumpton scored on a buzzer-beating drive. When Hallman fed Jordan Isom for a layup to open the fourth quarter, and Plummer made two free throws, the Golden Eagles’ lead went back to 13, and they were out of danger.
East Davidson (45): Hallman 19, Plummer 6, Lookabill 6, Anders 5, Cumpton 5, Isom 2, Williams 2.
North Rowan (33): Farmer 12, White 8, Alexander 5, Washington 4, Russell 2, Allen 2, Blaire.
