East Rowan’s girls are rolling and had little difficulty in a 58-38 win at Central Davidson on Thursday in a non-conference game that was postponed earlier this season.

East Rowan (19-2) has won eight in a row since an upset loss at Central Cabarrus shortly after Christmas. Dating back to last season, the Mustangs have won 41 of 47.

Shenell Pharr had 16 points and five steals to lead the Mustangs. Kelli Fisher had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Jocelyn Lowe had six points and five assists.

After a sluggish first quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Spartans 20-3 in the second quarter.

Emily Pigg scored 14 for Central Davidson (5-15), while Taylor Shoaf had 11.

East boys win

East Rowan’s boys basketball team got a season-high 16 points from Samuel Wyrick and cruised  61-40 at Central Davidson on Thursday.

Austin Wyse scored a career-high 11, freshman Isaac Baker had 10, and Logan Shuping hit three 3-pointers, including two early ones to get the Mustangs started.

Seth Wyrick had double-digit rebounds, as the Mustangs (9-12) bounced back from a cold-shooting loss against West Rowan on Tuesday. The Mustangs made nine 3-pointers.

East Rowan had lost five out of six before getting well against the Spartans (7-12).

7th-grade hoops

Jay Joseph hit the game-winning free throw with four seconds left to give the West Rowan Middle boys a 22-21 win over Corriher-Lipe.

Joseph finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Jalen Houston, Zeb Burns, and KJ Hernandez had strong defensive games for the Bulldogs. Logan Carter led Corriher-Lipe (2-2) with nine points.

• Joseph’s 18 points 12 rebounds and seven steals led the Bulldogs to a 35 – 7 win over Southeast (0-5). Quay Weeks had eight points and four assists. Houston and Mike Molenda had strong defensive games for the Bulldogs (3-2).

West Rowan’s next game is Tuesday against Knox.

• Taylor Poole scored 18 points and Abigail Wilson had 12 as West Rowan Middle’s girls won 41-8 against Corriher-Lipe.

Erwin’s girls won 40-27 against Mooresville. Maci Cooper scored 20 points, Adalie Harrison had 14, and Jordan Beaver added six for the Eagles.

College hoops

Seth Martin (West Rowan) scored 15 points for Catawba Valley Community College in a 64-62 win against Guilford Tech.

• Nate Jones (Davie) scored 22 as Davidson County Community College won 100-89 against Sandhills CC.

Prep basketball

West Rowan junior Khaila Hall has 995 career points going into Friday’s home game against Concord.

• South Rowan (15-6, 12-2 SPC) is at Hickory Ridge (16-4, 11-2) in the biggest girls game on Friday.

Hickory Ridge prevailed 51-48 in the first meeting.

• The key boys game of the night is Concord (15-7, 10-4)  at West Rowan (13-8, 9-4).

Concord won 92-76 in the first meeting, a game West Rowan standout Celexus Long missed with illness. West Rowan freshmen Caleb Mauldin and Martavio Rankin combined for 37 points in the first meeting.

College baseball

The Catawba Indians travel to Carson-Newman this weekend to open SAC play.

Catawba was  voted the preseason favorite in the league.

Catawba leads the series with Carson-Newman 55-37 and has enjoyed recent success in Jefferson City, Tenn. Catawba has won eight straight on the road at Carson-Newman and is 24-14 all-time at the Silver Diamond Complex.

Catawba will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face Stillman in a three-game series the following weekend.

Local golf

Corbin Hills Golf Club will host a new Senior Golf Association this year.

Senior golfers age 60 and older are welcome.

Tournament play will begin in March and be played the second Wednesday in each month.

Starting time for each event will be a 9 a.m.  shotgun start.

Association fee is $25 per player for the year.

Each golfer will be responsible for the appropriate cart and green fee for each event. Players will compete in individual stroke play (flighted) formats initially to establish tournament handicaps.
