Second vote scheduled on Granite Quarry mayoral election

GRANITE QUARRY  — The Granite Quarry Board of Aldermen will hold a called meeting at 5 p.m., Jan. 29, at Town Hall to have a second vote on whether the town should go to separate mayoral elections, starting in November.

The second reading and vote on the proposed change to the town charter are required after the board voted 3-2 Jan. 5 in favor of having separate elections for mayor every two years. At present, aldermen choose a mayor among themselves at their first meeting after municipal elections, which occur in November of odd-numbered years.

The change would mean Granite Quarry voters, not the town board, would elect a mayor.

Aldermen are trying to stay within a 60-day timeframe to follow the correct legal procedure in changing the charter. That’s why the special meeting is being called. The board’s next regular meeting is 7 p.m., Feb. 2.
