Center for Faith & the Arts is kicking off its 20th year with a Retrospective Exhibit celebrating its history of providing opportunities for the community to engage in both creativity and contemplation.

The reception is open to the public and will be held Thursday, Jan. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at CFA, 207 W. Harrison St., with parking and entrance behind Haven Lutheran Church.

Founded in 1995 as a result of the vision and work of Dr. J. Daniel Brown, retired Catawba College professor, the mission remains to encourage exploration of the connection between art and spirituality. CFA has historically embodied this through productions by the award-winning St. Thomas Players theater company and offering exhibits and lectures on a variety of topics, featuring presenters from musician and artist Scott Avett to scholar Dr. Bart Ehrman.

“Dan’s original vision is exactly where we still are, but our methods of delivering that mission to the community have evolved and changed over the years,” stated long-term board member Mark Ritchie.

Beginning this month, multiple new items have been added to the Center’s calendar. Yoga, Belly Dance and Nia Technique classes are offered, based on the belief that we are holistic beings and that well-being includes more than just physical fitness.

A weekly meditation group will begin meeting Jan. 29 at 7:15 p.m. and is open to the general public. The Olde Rowan Fiber Guild holds its meetings the third Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. Classes taught by individual artists are in the works for the coming months.

After the Retrospective reception, the next major event is CFA’s 20th Anniversary Celebration on March 7. Tickets are $75 each and include heavy hors d’oeuvres, desserts and an open bar, as well as entertainment by St. Thomas Players and the honoring of Dr. J. Daniel Brown for his vision and legacy.

“Twenty years is a milestone worth celebrating, especially for a smaller non-profit,” stated Karen Campbell, chairperson of the board of directors.

“CFA continues to fulfill an important niche as we provide opportunities to experience the arts while encouraging contemplation and personal growth. We are excited to expand our offerings to the community as we celebrate all we have accomplished in the last two decades.”
