East Rowan’s Shiheem Saunders

East Rowan senior Shiheem Saunders is the Post’s Athlete of the Week.

Saunders decisioned  Salisbury’s J.C. Burton, 15-8, at 182 pounds in one of the marquee matchups in Saturday’s Rowan County Championships and was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Saunders has helped East Rowan get off to a fast start. The Mustangs are 9-1 and 3-0 in the South Piedmont Conference.

Saunders is coming off a junior season in which he was 3A state runner-up at 170 pounds. He had a 38-4 record with 29 pins.

Saunders also is an outstanding football player. An outside linebacker, he is a member of this year’s All-Rowan County team.
